A question about : Limping Dog

I have an appointment with the vet on Friday morning with my 8 year old staff. She very rarely goes to the vet, but I just wondered how much (generally) vets charge for just seeing the animal.

I have a feeling she is just getting old and will be prescribed some kind of arthritis medication which is fair enough. Just wondered how much the call out charge is.

I appreciate I could ring up and ask or should have asked when the appointment was made, but my mum made it this morning while I was at work.

Best answers:

  • Mines Ј25.50 consultation fee with drugs etc extra.
  • Usually somewhere between Ј20-30 for a consultation. You could ask them before you go.
  • If you live in London it might be a bit more than that quoted by other posters. One vet I used to use, which was quite corporate & to my mind solely interested in profit rather than animal welfare, had a consultation charge of Ј35. The place I switched to when I moved, although still pretty much in the same locality, charge Ј25 for the consultation.
  • Agree with the above. I'm in Surrey, so bordering on London prices - can't remember the amount of a consult (I go fairly often but it's part of Kiki's ongoing condition so always a direct claim with the insurance) but think it was around the Ј32-35 mark (but my vets is quite an 'advanced' vets in terms of equipment and service - 24 hour cover in-house, not shipped out to the nearest emergency clinic, in-house blood tests, x-rays there rather than at a referall branch, etc. - so I understand why it can cost slighty more)
  • Mine is Ј26 in the north of Scotland.
Hope she's OK. Maybe some glucosamine tablets and fish oil could help? Helped my elderly boy when he has stiffness in old age.
  • Thanks everyone. Got a general now, so that's good. Live just outside London, so guess it may be more of the expensive side, but has to be done.
I'm also hoping there's nowt wrong. She's going to a medivet, not sure if they are more expensive or not.
  • If the limping is recent, check her paws. One of mine has a cracked paw at the moment and limps if de-icing salt get's into it.
I'm treating it myself by cleaning his paws after walks and using barrier salve.
  • Joly, one of my cavaliers, is 12 next month and over a year ago had problems with stiff joints after lying down for a time.
I put him on Lintbell's Yumove , which contains glucosamine, chondroitin and other items, and he is a different dog. He's rarely stiff, really trots along on walks and regards the tablets as treats.
If you contact the company, they provide a very generous free sample and give a discount on any purchase.
