A question about : kings cross to west hampstead help please

In the middle of January midweek I have to travel between Kings Cross station and West Hampstead, I live in the north but after looking at a London tube map I am confused which would be the best route. Also
if I knew how long it would take I maybe will able to take a later, cheaper train to London
Thanks for any advice

Best answers:

  • You can go direct from St Pancras to West Hampstead using Thameslink. St Pancras is right next to Kings X. Takes about 8 minutes.
  • Use the tfl journey planner it can go down to street name level... and check which of the three West Hampstead stations your destination is closer to. You can also input time/date to get a more accurate estimate of journey times. https://www.tfl.gov.uk/plan-a-journey/
Likely you are looking at 20 mins via Metropolitan and Jubilee lines on the Tube and similar on the Thameslink route... but I'd add 10 to either for finding your way out of Kings Cross mainline and on to the train you choose and possibly slightly longer if you need to buy a ticket.
However, Thameslinks are 30 minute intervals cf a much more frequent Tube services, so Tube would in my view be preferred mode. The change from Met to Jubilee is a simple walk across the platform job.
    You'll need a ticket for Zone 1 & 2.
  • Thanks for the 2 answers they are very helpful
Any idea the approximate cost of these journeys?
    Thanks again

You may be able to get an 'add on' or 'travelcard' with your mainline fare into Kings X that works out cheaper?
  • just had a look at the tfl journey planner site, it will be really useful a bit nearer the the time, Thanks!
  • Once you find your way round, crossing from Kings Cross mainline to thameslink is simply crossing the road and going down one escalator, much quicker than navigating the tube network. 7-10 minutes travelling time.
Alternative is 12 minutes on the met line tube plus changing to the jubilee line and another minute on that tube.
Price will be the same if you use an oyster card or contactless debit/ credit card.
  • We were last down in London during the Olympics so sort of got familiar with Kings Cross and St Pancras, Would we pick up the Thames link from there (St Pancras)?
  • I'd guess that firbyfred is arriving by East Coast or Grand Central into King's Cross (KGX), but we do not know what time (or even what day; I'll assume a weekday).
I'd say the walk from Platforms 1-8 at KGX to either the Thameslink platforms at STP, or the sub-surface (not tube) Metropolitan LU platforms, would be similar; around 5 minutes.
Trains run on Thameslink 24/7, with most hours having a service of between 6 and 8 trains per hour, taking 6-7 minutes, with gaps of between 4 and 15 minutes.
Ignoring the possibility of changing at Baker Street, the Metropolitan Line is every 5 minutes to Finchley Road for much of the day, where there is cross-platform interchange to an even more frequent Jubille Line for the one-stop hop to West Hampstead LU. Total journey time is around 15-17 minutes, and is much more frequent than Thameslink late at night, but unlike Thameslink doesn't have a 24/7 service.
I don't agree that the stations at West Hampstead are "5+ minutes" walk apart. Google Maps says 2 minutes, and having walked it myself I agree with Google. You could spend longer walking along the platform if you're at the 'wrong' end of the train!
It is true that we do not know where in West Hampstead the destination is, so we can't advise on which station is more convenient. The Thameslink station has more exits, and is better if heading North. You'd generally want to be nearer the rear of the train. The LU station is further South (to exit, be at the front!), but if I was actually heading that way it would usually be quicker to take Thameslink anyway as the stations are so close together.
As for the fares, Oyster PAYG or contactless single is Ј2.90 peak (M-F 0630-0930 and 1600-1900) or Ј2.30 off-peak. This is the same on LU or Thameslink. (Avoid the expensive cash single fares in London!)
Extreme moneysavers could walk to Caledonian Road & Barnsbury (20 minutes from the gateline near Platform 1; about 15 longer than the walk at KGX/STP) and take London Overground, for only Ј1.70 peak or Ј1.50 off peak if paying by Oyster or contactless
Assuming firbyfred is arriving by train into King's Cross, it might be cheaper to buy a through ticket to West Hampstead Stns rather than "split" in London. For example, a Super Off Peak Return from Northallerton to London Terminals costs Ј112.50, which is the exact same price as a Super Off Peak Return from Northallerton to West Hampstead Stns.
  • Fortune Green Road is north of the stations so suits Thameslink well.
  • Sorry to bring this up again, coming back we have a choice of 1930hrs or 2100hrs trains leaving from Kings Cross, we would prefer the earlier train, would leaving West Hampstead at 1800hrs leave us enough time to catch the 1930hrs train
    Thanks
  • Thanks, Think I was wanting some reassurance before I booked the earlier train.
  • Don't book using the trainline.com, Book using the operator's own site (or any national rail operator) and you'll pay no fee. You can then print the tickets at your local station within an hour or so.
