A question about : Just bought a new tv....

Just bought a new tv and I've noticed while watching a film with black bars, the bars flicker from black to grey every few seconds. Also when watching sport say football or UFC the whole screen will flicker from a slighty darker image to a lighter one every few seconds which is incredibly annoying.

It does this on a variety of input devices...virgin TiVo box, blu ray player, usb stick.

It's an lg plasma

Does it sound like a fault or a characteristic of the tv?

Many thanks

Best answers:

  • Sounds like a fault to me, esp. on all inputs.
  • I ordered it on the 4th feb from ebuyer! if it is faulty would I be eligible for a refund or would I have to settle for a replacement?
  • Faulty backlight.
  • I would have thought that but OP says its a plasma, maybe they are confused.
  • It sounds like it's the "dynamic contrast" feature kicking in.
On some TVs, there's a colour/picture setting for something like "dynamic contrast"... That will either adjust the brightness/contrast based on how bright the room is (according to a tiny sensor on the front of the TV)... Or it will adjust the brightness of the screen according to how dark the overall image is (so it turns up the brightness in dark scenes, and reduces it in bright scenes).
Either way, this automatically changing brightness/contrast isn't usually smooth -- the screen visibly jumps between bright/dark settings, and I can't understand why these settings even exist.
Anyway, you might have some luck by checking the colour settings and disabling the relevant "dynamic" or "auto-adjust" feature...
