A question about : Joint current account income requirements

My girlfriend and I are going to take out a joint current account for our first home - mortgage payment, bills, food etc...

I've been looking a lot at santander 123 and it seems the best option with the cash back and interest earned (we will keep Ј5k as a float always in there).

But our income are somewhat a little strange, basically my gf earns Ј21k but Im still studying (6th and final year), and working part time on around Ј8-Ј10k or so. - the mortgage is taking into account a job offer 3 months in advance.

But santander list are not a student or in full term education as one of their reliability requirements. I also couldn't see any salary requirements but they do ask for Ј500 a month, we won't be moving our salaries into this account but will both have a standing order of around Ј750 each (Ј1500) so will easily hit this.

Questions:

1 they say no students but can I still apply as a joint holder with my GF?

2 would any income requirements get us rejected from the current account?

Best answers:

  • 1. I am pretty sure, yes.
    2. No.
    A side note:
    Joint or Single Bank Account?
  • Thanks, we would rather have a joint account, we both have excellent credit scores - obviously as we are getting a joint mortgage.
What should I put my employment as? Part time and ignore the student aspect?
So it's all good to apply for the joint current account then?
Also, what about the Santander joint credit card as well for our larger house purchases and get more cash back, these obviously have more strict salary requirements - can we do this? - we would apply after the mortgage of course.
  • A credit card isn't joint. It's sole - with extra cardholders added. The main cardholder is solely liable for everything.
  • Ah ok that makes it easier for application purposes, but would the other card holder get any benefits such as building up their personal credit history?
In other words, would it affect the other card holders credit record ? Positive or negative). Might get two credit cards and also use them for personal expenses such as petrol etc (Ј2 more a month though...)
  • That's a shame, we will be fighting for whos the main account holder on the credit card in the case! Nevermind, can't have it all
  • The current account all went through no problems , just waiting on the PIN numbers through the post, thanks again. Will get te credit car after our mortgage goes through
