A question about : Ј5 gifts

HI all, we have a Ј5 max price gift for my sisters and brothers in law - however finding hard not to buy anything that just looks really naff! Anyone spotted any Ј5 bargains around this year. Got the Ј5 cookbooks on Amazon last year but not spotted anything so bargainous (is that a word?) this year. All ideas welcome

Best answers:

  • Not quite the same, but we have a Ј5 secret santa at work. I always do a "gift in a mug", cheap mug, personalise with sharpies, fill with coffee / hot choc sachets, a few "posh" chocolates, and a miniture baileys or whisky.
Wrap with cellophane and ribbon. They are always very well received.
  • Asos have a few nice wee Pilgrim bits for a fiver that may be suitable
  • I know smellies can be a little boring but Tesco have half price opts of their sets at the moment

Lots of DVDs you can pick up for Ј5 - I saw 'About Time' in Sainsburys today which I thought was a really good film.
    Scarf and gloves
  • They are all mid thirties age wise if that helps
  • Wilkinsons have a fruity bath range for a pound each, they look very nice, bubble baths, shower gel, soap, bath bombs, scrunchie thing, shampoo, conditioner, body scrubs. There are a few different scents and colours, that would be 4 items in a gift bag if you factod in the cost of the bag.
Savers have 3 Nails.Inc nail polish in a box for a fiver. They also havd a good selection of alcohol. There is a full size bottle of peach schnapps for a fiver, bottles of martini, babychams, wines, ginger wines, ports and 4 flavoured lagers for just 2 quid, they also sell many perfumes for a fiver and decent bubble baths and other toiletries.
  • I have the same Ј5 limit for secret santas and have bought a few towel cakes in the past. I think originally they were called 'Unreal Cakes' but there are loads of different ones available now. Basically they're a flannel wrapped up to resemble a cake, with either fake or soap fruit decorating the top:

  • made a banana split set for dad this year
    banana cutter! from ebay
    chocolate sauce
    packet of nuts/muesli
    a sundae dish
    ice cream scoop
he will have to provide his own ice cream and bananas
but you get the drift, adaptable for other flavors
  • Search for 'festive fiver', MSE used to hold a competition where hundreds of ideas for Christmas gifts under Ј5 would be posted
  • This year my Ј5 presents are sets of 12 Yankee Tealights, I picked them up on 3 for 2 at Boots so three sets for just under Ј14.
  • If you're just having a fiver each, would it not be better just cutting out the presents altogether, or each person pick a sibling/in law out of a hat and just spend more on one present?
  • marksys have lots of smellies a pound each. like shower gel, bath foam. hand soap, body lotion
  • Poundland have some mini ice buckets in which you could fill with some mini bottles of wine, one of the shaped silicone ice cube trays and something edible to enjoy with the wine possibly?
  • If it were me receiving the gift, I'd prefer a nice bottle of wine to enjoy as a couple rather than lots of things gathered together to look like its cost more.
  • I've had to do 3 Ј5 secret santas this year and I've got all of them from Hotel Chocolat. They do several different items, including this Robin.

I picked them up yesterday (they do Click & Collect where I live) and they are all already wrapped in bags with gift tags on the front. Even better as no extra wrapping to do!
  • some homemade shortbread?
  • This secret santa I did:
1 x mini bottle of wine Ј1.99 from Tesco
1 x bath bomb from Lush (I used the cheapest, which is bear shaped and Ј1.95)
1 x "dessert collection" Pergale chocolates from Poundland (Ј1)
I did it for my partner, as he got somebody he didn't know at all at work. Dull but covered various general "likes." (I hope!)
  • have a look at "not on the high street" website they have some unusual bits n bobs under a fiver, earlier this year as an example i got a nice notebook made from scrap sari material with hand made paper for Ј5
