A question about : Independent Travel Insurance advice

Hi all,

I booked a villa in Spain and Ryanair flights seperately. This was back in April when the volcano had only just erupted (so was not fully aware of the impending problems).

Am looking at insurance, and the way I see it, I am only going to be covering myself/family for medical expenses/liability, etc.

The way I see it, all I can get is a refund from Ryanair should our flight be cancelled and a villa refund if the villa company I booked with goes bust. Correct?

If our holiday should be affected by closed airspace, then we lose the villa, right? If that was the case, I am sure the villa company would come to an arrangement for future booking.

Let me know if I got this right!

Many thanks,

TEk

PS - feel free to recommend an insurance company while you're at it!

  • hi i have purchased independant travellers insurance with axa .you pay extra for this on top off the standard insurance .they have told me if the airline cancels the flights from the uk. they will pay for the cost of unused accomodation.if you cannot get a refund from agents.but only independant covers this .not the standard insurance.
  • M&S will cover for volcano disruptions provided the airport you're flying from and to are open when you book the policy, and assuming you get independent traveller's cover.
  • We booked flights through BMI baby back in October last year and also a villa through owners direct.
I have insurance through my bank account but they won't cover us.
Are there any policies that will cover us for accomodation does anyone know - we are a group of 8 that have a villa and a casita for 2 weeks costing Ј1900 so we really don't want to lose the money if it can be helped?

"Direct Line, Fortis, and Saga have also said they will cover policyholders for delay, missed departure and cancellation. However, most travel insurance firms will only cover customers for cancellation or trip abandonment once their flight has been delayed for at least 24 hours.
HSBC, M&S Money and First Direct have all confirmed that, although claims relating to volcanic eruptions are not usually covered by travel insurance policies, they will consider claims in the current circumstances."
