A question about : Hungry Horse

I went to Hungry Horse (a pub chain) today and had their Wednesday-only Curry offer.

This is a Curry and a Pint for Ј4.99.

I wasn't expecting that much, but what I got was deliciously excellent VFM.

There were 7 or 8 different curry choices available, and what turned up was very nicely presented.

There was a metal dish containing the Chicken Tikka Masala, a generous helping of saffron rice, a poppadom, and two small bowls containing mango chutney and tomato & onion salad.

The pub is opposite the cinema I go to, so I had Curry and a Pint and a Film and an ice cream for about Ј8 (using my Unlimited card).

Best answers:

  • The nearest one to me is 6 miles away.
May suggest it as this months date night with my other half.
    Edit
Do they offer an alcohol free alternative?
    Thanks
  • Normally their curries are OK, as long as they heat them for long enough....have had a few that have still been frozen in the middle, but they normally get it right second time. Never really bothered me - when you're paying next to nothing, you have pretty low expectations.
  • My wife and I visited our local one tonight for a pre-cinema meal. Thursday offer is free dessert or starter with Big Plate mains. Nice meals (10oz Gammon Steak for my wife and huge Cod & Chips for me). Excellent value. As far as pub grub goes we find them better than the average.
  • Thanks for that..... Mifght have a G & T next time.
  • Never tried Hungry Horse, I am sure there is one not too far from us - we might have to try it one night.
  • I am going tonight with the OH Will report back what it is like!! nom nom.
  • I went again today. This time, they had a printed menu of curries.
Although there are various choices, the variety isn't vast:
    - Chicken Korma
    - Chicken Tikka Masala with rice
    - Chicken Tikka Masala with chips (sacrilege)
    - Vegetable Tikka Masala
    - Chicken Jal-Crazy
    - Tik Tikka Boom (very hot Tikka Masala)
    - Beef Madras
    - Big Bombay Banquet (+Ј2) - more curry related food than you could possibly eat
I had the Korma this time. Wasn't as good as last week's Chicken Tikka Masala.
  • I went to the mill on the soar last night.
Was a disaster. Took 45mins+ for the food to come (it wasn't that busy), our side of onion rings came first AND the curry wasn't heated throughout
  • This seems to be a common complaint... I wonder if it is worth mentioning to HHHQ?
  • The first and last time I went to a Hungry Horse the food was atrocious, even my jacket potato was raw in the middle and microwaved so it was all soggy.
Most of the big chain pub restaurants serve ready meals, and this is how they can do the amazing cheap deals like 2 meals for Ј10.
It keeps the costs low, food is ready quickly and you don't need a chef, or to cook from scratch.
Firms like Brake Brothers who supply restaurants also do ready made curries, pasta meals, desserts just about everything you can think of, all ready in a flash in the microwave. I prefer to eat somewhere where it's cooked fresh to order and eat out less.
  • The food does take ages to come out and then its not the best, probably one to avoid repeating
  • I wonder if someone from HHHQ has been reading our little thread.
I went to HH again today, and had Chicken Tikka Masala. It was searingly hot.
Still can't fault it for 80p more than a McD's Value meal.
    Gordons G&T, too.
  • I have a Hungry Horse not far from me.....i have to say i have never had a bad meal there x
  • One of the best I went to was the Hungry Horse, Bath Road, Reading. However the other one located near Reading we found a big disappointment.
