A question about : How much is your weekly shop?

We are a family of 4. There is myself and the husband, my daughter who is 4 and my son who is 8 months (he is blw so we don't buy baby food but we do still buy milk at Ј8.49 every 4-5 days!)

Our average weekly food shop is about Ј65 this includes sons baby milk.. Was curious to see how much everyone else's weekly shop was so I can see if mine is a lot or about right! We have tried shopping at Aldi but I always have to go to asda for extras Aldi doesn't sell and I spend even more than planned! We are currently shopping at morrisons as their fruit and veg works out cheaper! X

Thanks for reading!

  • Two adults plus our 10 month old son (make all of his food ourselves) is around Ј50-60 a week from Aldi including nappies, loads of fruit/veg and meat too. We try and make most things from scratch. Switched from Sainsburys a couple of months ago as that tended to be at or above the Ј80 mark!
We don't buy alcohol and tend to stick to the middle-of-the-road food, not premium or value.
I think you're doing pretty well
  • That's amazing we spend that and is just the two of us
I was wondering of maybe looking at our weekly spend and try and get it down but I am not sure I want to start. I really should as we are moving into a new bigger house so all our outgoings will increase
  • No, that's about right. I have managed a family of 5 on Ј150 a month, but that was tighter than a ducks...well, it was tight. I prefer about Ј250 a month for 5. I dont always hit it and certainly this month, we busted the budget royally because of holidays, but I'll get it back on track again next month. I've just bought half a pig from a work colleague and I'll have a lamb off him spring next year. I buy food in bulk where I can, so I go to Costco once a month to stock up. I dont bother buying rice in piddly little 1Kg bags, I buy it in 20Kg lots, same with flour, sugar etc. We have a pantry of sorts so I can lay in extra on a monthly basis. My stockpile is sufficient to feed us for at least 2 months, possibly more with the half pig we have now. I consider it a 'what if I lost my job' fund.
  • There is just me and my boy and I spend about roughly (if I am being good and strict) about 30 a week. One week out month though I spend 50 for proper shop x
  • I'm spending too much, it looks like it! Something like Ј80-90 per week for two adults and one child for food and cleaning products and some basic toiletries (tooth paste, etc). My mother is living with us until Christmas so I give her about Ј40/week to buy veggies and fresh fish from a local market, and I do Tesco online for another Ј40-50/week. I don't understand what I'm doing wrong, we cook everything from scratch and we don't buy semi-prepared or canned food. We don't drink juices or alcohol and we don't buy sweets.
  • Me and the Mrs,
We always use Tesco delivery service ordered on a Monday an delivered Sunday Evening between 9-10pm because that slot is Ј1 if done on the Monday before!
Weekly shop including household goods and lunchbox stuff comes to no more than Ј35.
We find that using online shopping stops us adding things we don't need and also saves time and petrol.
Also Tesco is a bit like a lottery sometimes with "freebies" that end up in the bags. In 6 months of orders they have only drastically messed up once not giving us the bleach that was ordered with no substitute. This came free on the next shop after speaking to them.
  • @FireWyrm: No pastries, cake, and almost no bread for us... if we do eat cake it's home-made. I'm a health freak and we try not to eat sugar anymore, unless it comes from fruit. My daughter eats school lunches (currently free) and they do serve dessert so I think that's more than enough sugar for her.
Thank you - yes I know with some planning I should be able to cut down... I use Tesco because I get a cash vouchers from them - I have a clubcard which is attached to my Tesco credit card - which I use for all spending (and pay it back right away). Delivery costs Ј3 per month (midweek delivery plan) and it also saves a lot of time for me.
  • I tried Ocado and Asda with similar results except they don't have the vouchers - not the ones attached to a CC anyway*. I can't switch to buying in-person, it simply takes too much time for me which I don't have. I work full-time, I have a long commute and I'm a single mother. Right now my mother is here and she can go to local markets but that's temporary.
*I use the Tesco CC to buy plane, train tickets, including those for work, so I do get a lot of vouchers... it's my main spending card, I don't use debit at all.
  • Its my DH and I one week, and then we have his 2 x DDs the next week. I generally spend about Ј60 a week, but when the kids are with us, we give them money for school dinners, usually get a take away one night and DH usually does a top up shop.
That Ј60 includes a few treats and household (cleaning mostly) supplies as well tho.
We eat quite well from that. I know I could cut it down a lot, if I was forced to.
  • Not being able to get out much I shop online with Tesco and find them great - especially now as oyu can get Ј1 delivery slots.
I use a Tesco credit card and also like having the vouchers.
I find we only need to shop once every three weeks - for hubby and myself - about a third of the bill is cat food for our 3/4 strays - but the bill is usually Ј110 every 3 weeks.
Hubby tops up with some fresh veg once a week which is under Ј5.
  • Hi FireWyrn, have you ever considered becoming a savvy saver, shopper personal trainer?! You could move into our house anytime for a week and completely overhaul me. I am sure there are thousands out there that could benefit from your knowledge coupled with a hands on approach. A career awaits! I want to thank you for your straight talking advice.
  • I shop monthly online with either Tesco, Sainsburys or Asda, depending on what I am getting and which has the best offers, I then top up essentials weekly in local shops. I also use Approved Food every couple of months. It usually works out around Ј15-Ј20 a week. I don't have a local Aldi, we do have a Lidl but my health is currently very very poor and I would need a taxi to get there which would more than wipe out any savings.
  • We are a family of two adults and two children and currently spend about Ј65 a week in Lidl, and perhaps spend another Ј5-Ј10 topping up at another supermarket during the week.
We tend to eat a big roast dinner on Sunday, freeze child size portions with leftovers (for an easy healthy child friendly 'ready meal' later in the week) and then stretch the meat out for another meal or two (stir fry usually- rice). Try and have very cheap meals a couple of nights a week- we all enjoy pasta and pesto, baked potatoes with whatever toppings- tuna and sweetcorn etc. A big batch of chilli padded out with plenty of chopped onions and lentils always provides another meal or two for the freezer. Weekend treat is often homemade pizza with dough made in the breadmaker- so very cheap and so tasty with whatever bits and pieces we have knocking about to stick on it!
Don't think we could go back to shopping at a larger supermarket these days, the cost savings are jaw dropping.
Another eye opener for me is how easy it has been simply not to buy certain things we did before. For example, snacky bits and pieces just disappear in this house within days of doing a shop so I just don't buy them anymore!
  • Ours varies a lot as I stock up on DW tabs, laundry products and loo rolls when they are on offer from the wholesalers, we wait for the flyers with the offers on and plan when to get stocked up.
I also go to Aldi at the beginning of the month and as well as the weekly shop I get enough longer lasting stuff for the month, like butter (Ј1.79 instead of Ј3 at Sainsbugs) and ground coffee (Ј1.49 instead of Ј3.50) and things in tins and packets like beans, couscous, and porridge and wine (1 bottle a week max), this is my expensive week and I spend Ј100+
Asian supermarkets are great for staples like noodles, I love Kimchi noodles for lunch with chilli sauce.
The other 3 weeks I just buy pack up stuff, meat, fruit, milk and bread, a lot of our veg comes free from FIL allotment, and I spend Ј40 to Ј50. I tend to alternate these shops between Aldi, Morries and Sainsbugs.
I would happily go to Aldi every time, but my Mum likes to go to the others occasionally, mostly to look at clothes, and we always shop together.
I prefer to do it this way as it cuts down on the time spent shopping.
We budget Ј350 a month for food but we always have a significant surplus which builds over time and pays for beer, wine and treats for both Christmas and our numerous (4 full weeks plus weekends) caravanning trips each year.
I go to Waitrose only to spend my vouchers I get from doing surveys, though I do know people who do all their shopping there or at M and S.
I also know people who spend Ј150 A WEEK in the big 4 and chuck half of it away!
I am trying to reform them but its not easy.
I soooooo wish we had a Costco near by, the nearest on is 60 miles away
