A question about : How much will my council tax be?

Hi, could someone please advise as to how the council tax (Monthly cost) is calculated? I think it's something like this...

The yearly total is Ј997 and I will be living on my own. Is it Ј997 divided by 10, minus 25% single persons allowance = monthly figure. Or am I way off?

Best answers:

  • In my experience, that's how they were done 5 years ago when I was sending out the letters to people, but it may have changed - they were thinking of asking for 2 months worth of payments up front but I don't know how realistic that would've been.
  • Are you just moving in now? If so you will get a bill from the day you move in until 31/03/15, which will be due on 1st march or 31st March.
Then you will receive the years bill Ј997 minus the 25% to be paid in 10 months, approx Ј75.00 per month

  • I take it you are already living in the property? If so the new year charge is usually set in early March and then the annual bills will be sent out. The bill will show your charge and any discounts you are entitled to (in your case 25%). The balance after the discount is then spread over 12 months from 5th April to 5th Mar the following year. The first instalment is usually the odd instalment.
    Based on Ј997 your instalments would probably be 1 @ Ј65.75 and 11 @ Ј62.
The 10 instalment option was more a LGA perk, this was scrapped in 2013 and most authorities should automatically give you 12 instalments on your bill.
  • Nothing to stop you asking the council if you can pay in 12 instalments rather than 10
  • Hi,
Thank you for your replies! I don't move in until the start of March so I am sure that there will be a bill waiting for me as the estate agent sets everything up apparently
    Thanks again
  • If you are renting, then your liability for Council Tax starts from the day your tenancy starts, which may be earlier than the day you actually move in. Also if you move out before your tenancy ends, then you remain liable for the CT until that date unless someone else subsequently occupies the property.
