A question about : How to find "work from home" roles

Hello

I have a mild disability and would like to work primarily from home rather than commuting to an office (although would consider for example doing 1 day a week at an office and 4 days at home).

I have done some proofreading and web site testing from home in the past, but the company is not around anymore.

I am NOT looking for online surveys, pyramid selling etc. but a 'proper' job, whether employed or self-employed.

I would be interested in most roles that could be done from home, such as admin or IT related, for example updating website content. I'm good with computers (above average).

How do I go about finding 'work from home' roles? Could anybody give me suggestions for where to start looking for companies that offer this type of roles?

Best answers:

  • I think the problem is that, if you could do your work from home, so could someone in India for 1/10th of the cost.
Years ago, the site RentACoder.com allowed people to advertise ad-hoc jobs (mostly programming and web testing, etc.). It seemed a great idea to increase my experience and replace my full-time job. The only problem was that I'd sometimes have to do half the work just to see if it was something I could complete, and by then, someone would've offered to do the work for an effective rate way below the minimum wage.
I think they re-branded as Freelancer.com and have a wider range of work available these days, but I haven't looked. Might be worth a quick glance to see if anything's changed, or if the rates are better these days...
  • How about a chatline monitor position? I do know someone who works part time for a chatline. PM me if you wish and I will ask her which company it is so I can give you the details.
  • Have a look on google at "work from home doing XXXXXXXXXXX sector" jobs.
For example, I am an experienced medical secretary so I can work from home doing outsourced typing
  • www.indeed.co.uk has some working from home jobs - not sure whether you can find what you are after but number of job search websites provide this.
You can also search proofreading roles on the same. Reed.co.uk another one.
  • If you want to earn a decent living working from home, you usually need good contacts, a good reputation and skills that are in demand and cannot easily be obtained elsewhere at a low cost. Much of what is on offer just provides pocket money.
  • There are companies offering customer service roles from home. You would need a room that is quiet, and Windows 7 or vista I think. If you look on this site or google enough you will find them. I think they work with companies like Argos and others.
  • Hi,
I think I'm in a similar position to cj2011 and so would really appreciate any advice too please.
  • Have a look on google at "work from home doing XX sector" jobs.
For example, I am an experienced Social Media Marketing so I can work from home doing outsourced Social Media Works.
