A question about : Gourmet Society Membership 3months forЈ1!

Have a Superdrug Beauty Card? There is a link for a months free membership to the Gourmet Society, or pay Ј1 to get 3 months. You can get up to 50% off meals and 25% off cinema tickets!!!! I've just signed up title=Smile x

Best answers:

  • I took up this deal but failed to cancel (an oversight on my part).
My account has just been debited Ј39.95 for this year's subscription and they won't refund.
    BE AWARE
  • I also took out the 3 months membership for Ј1, did not use the card (as you can't use it weekends and eg Westfield at anytime), did not notice the small print at the foot of the original email about auto renewal.
They sent out a courtesy email which I have subsequently found in spam.
Took 30 minutes to get through by phone. Very nasty attitude, effectively said that they would not refund.
Tricksters, Gourmet Society are not a nice company to deal with.
  • The gourmet Society is a total con BEWARE AVOID
Not only does the card not work half the time with restaurants refusing it on many occasions Even thought its in their stated valid period.
The automatic renewal and bad customer service is horrific.
Card was automatically renewed and they refused to cancel and give my money back.
DO NOT give these people your bank details.
    Complete scam!
  • only sign up to the free trial, as above don't enter your bank details
  • My mum has had the same problem. Auto renewal is a disgusting practice. Surely this is something that MSE should be looking at highlighting and warning people against.
  • Think it's best to avoid this one then..
  • Keep emailing and bugging them and they do give you your money back but only Ј25 - they keep Ј15 as an admin fee which I will be requesting back from them.
They have to notify you that they will be taking money out of your account according to their own T's & c's.
    Fight them!
Quite right this is a disgusting practice that car insurance companies also practice.
Can we get the law changed?
  • I did not read the paperwork.
Honestly please keep emailing them and they should give you a refund. I emailed them everyday for 2 weeks after phoning and waiting 40 minutes only to be treated like crap.
NB tell them by phone or email that you want confirmation that they will not be taking any money out of your account next year.
They do offer cheap cinema ticket - Odeon charge Ј10 for delivery but you can get info how to book online at cineworld -i paid Ј11 for 2 2d cinema tickets within London - have not used them yet.
  • I have had one of these cards for a month or 2 I paid Ј1 for 4 months, as I've only used it once and didn't want to get charged I rang today to cancel it even though it lasts till 31st Aug. I was under the impression from other posts that you would be asked to send the card back with a cancellation code they give you over the phone. However I was just told that it had been cancelled and would not be renewed come 31st Aug, can anyone verify if they have changed their cancellation policy. I'm a little worried perhaps they have done nothing and will still take my money!!
  • Hi. I would be very wary of this company. They have started renewing memberships early so that when you phone up to cancel at the end of the membership, they have already charged you for renewal and they won't let you cancel. And they won't give you the money back. They renewed me over a week early.
That can't be right. Can it? Even if it says in their t&cs (which they don't make clear to you if you renew over the phone as I did), do you not have a statutory right to decline a service before it has even started?
They email you to tell you but it gets lost or ignored along with the other 5 or 6 emails that they send you every week.
After 5 phone conversations, an email and a posted letter, the best they can do is offer half the money back as a "good will gesture". They con me out of Ј40 then give me Ј20 back and expect me to be happy about it!
    AVOID
I find also that a lot of the local restaurants don't do weekends. Who wants to go out for a meal on a Tuesday night?
  • English Heritage have just sent a (free) 3 month GS card out with their magazine. I will have to check out the Ts and Cs but if they don't have our bank details and we use it, I guess we can't be charged.
  • I was curious about this card because it's one of the freebies offered by Lloyds bank.
After looking at the restaurants in my area, I realised that the vast majority were the crappy chain "restaurants" that you find in every town; Beefeater, Cafe Rouge, Prezzo, etc. There are one or two proper restaurants and cafes listed... but you're not allowed to see the details without having a membership number... Catch 22!
I'm guessing with the chain restaurants you just get the same 2 for 1 deals that are given out all over the place for free anyway.
Does anyone have any experience of what the deals are like for independent restaurants? Is it worth it for those or are they restrictive in times/days and/or have low discounts?
