A question about : Getting Paid into American Bank Account; best way to transfer money to UK?

Hi there,

I've recently been been hired to write for a US based website. They offered to pay via Paypal, but I find their charges too high for the small amount I'll be earning an my (and their) ideal payment method is to pay me directly into a US bank account. As it happens, I'm in the States until the end of May and it shouldn't be a problem to open a bank account whilst I'm here (either that or I can use my SO's bank account).

However, I of course will need that money back in England, and it gets a little bit more complicated as I'll be moving around Europe for the foreseeable future and will need a way of getting money regardless of what country I am in.

I read that Citibank might be a good option, but I'm still skeptical about their exchange rates. Does anybody have any experience of transferrring money from the US to Europe, maybe using an online company?

Thanks so much!

Best answers:

  • I have had a UK Citibank account for years as I have property in the USA and relatives who live in the USA.
With their Sterling, US$ and Euro current accounts it is simplicity itself to transfer between the accounts, on-line or on the telephone. You can also draw cash from an ATM in any of the 3 currencies using the supplied debit cards, or pay for goods/services with the card.
The exchange rate 'spread' has been variable over the years - last time it was about 2 cents(US$ to UKЈ - ) worse than the best available for large sums.
Depending on the sum involved there are many brokers with whom you can set up accounts and get better rates.
