A question about : German Wings flights cancelled due to pilot strike

I hope I’m posting this in the right place.

We were due to fly to German last Thursday morning withGerman Wings and come home on Friday evening. On Wednesday afternoon I received a text from German Wings telling methat, due to pilot strikes on Thursday and Friday, my flight on Thursdayevening was cancelled. They alsoinformed me that I could re-schedule my flight or cancel my booking.

When I checked the website I could either re-schedule myflight to Friday morning (which also ended up being cancelled) or to Wednesdayevening. We decided it really wasn’tworth flying on Friday and returning the same day so re-scheduled our flight tothat evening (Wednesday).

We were due to stay in a hotel on the Thursday evening andafter a quick phone call managed to extend our booking to stay there on theWednesday evening as well.

My question is, can I claim the additional night hotel stay fromthe airline? Everything I’ve readrelates to compensation if you arrive at your final destination at least threehours late.

Best answers:

  • did you ask the airline if they would cover additional costs if you chose the flight on the Wednesday before you accepted that option?
You may be due compensation based on departing over one hour earlier than the cancelled flight - this would be €125 according to this table

You may have to go to court for this as they may argue that strikes are not their problem
If you have further questions you should post on the "Other EU Airlines thread"
  • Thanks for your reply Caz3121. I've just re-read the thread 'before you post your thread, read this' thread and it seems I've broken the rules by starting my own thread. Apologies, I couldn't see an appropriate thread to post on :-(
I've contacted the airline and will await their response.
