A question about : Is Fizzy Flavoured Water Better Than...

Diet Coke / Coke Zero / Water?

We're having a discussion at work about it. I have voted that fizzy flavoured water is better than diet coke, but not as good as plain water, but not far off.

Would like to hear some thoughts title=Smile

Best answers:

  • Better value, better flavour, better for your health?
Without your criteria the question is impossible to answer.
  • I was under the impression that health - wise they were both as bad as each other because they both contain lots of sugars or sweeteners.
  • Diet coke, coke zero is flavoured water!
Flavoured water with fruit juices etc has almost as much sugar as full fat coke, eg this has six spoonfuls of sugar per bottle ,is acidic and has preservatives etc https://www.tesco.com/groceries/produ.../?id=262077225.
Low/no sugar flavoured waters are still chock full of additives and mostly very acidic so no good for teeth. https://www.tesco.com/groceries/produ.../?id=284475446
For comparison dietary details for coke zero. Very little difference from other "flavoured waters" as coke is , after all, a flavoured water. https://www.tesco.com/groceries/produ.../?id=282822492
Plain water fine, anything added to the water is just degrees of "badness"
  • Yes, health - sorry :P
    However this:

Doesn't have that much added to it, surprisingly no sugars that the Volvic contains, so I would have thought it's not much worse than water. Also contains much less additives than Coke.
  • It has bubbles , fruit juice and citric acid , so damaging to teeth and acid erosion of teeth is a growing problem.
    Plain water is still best.
  • With fizzy drinks, its the acid in them that causes as much (if not more) damage than the sugar! So no/low sugar drinks can be worse as you may drink more of them and the acid is still there to corrode your teeth.
  • Here are the ingredients in CocaCola Zero
    https://www.coca-cola.co.uk/brands/coke-zero.html
    (Diet Coke is similar)
It's basically water, colouring and E-numbers, flavouring, caffeine and some other chemicals. Apparently you can even clean the loo with Coke, it's that acidic.
If you take, for example, San Pellegrino, the ingredients are much healthier (as in, more natural):

Someone with a fixation about sugar won't approve of either, probably, but if it's a choice of A or B I would go for the latter.
  • They are both equally bad
    - Fizz = acid, bad for teeth
    - Flavour = sugar, bad for teeth, bad for health
    - Random preservatives = just plain bad
  • It's worth adding that Doctors now believe that artificial sweeteners can actually make you feel hungrier.
Could you make your own flavoured water with, say, water, fruit juice (maybe 10-20%) and agave nectar or stevia?
This is not a recipe, but I am curious if this will work, and too mean () to get the sweetener just to try it.
  • Ph of lemon flavoured water 3 , coke 2.5 , plain water around 7.2 .
Fruit juice is really just a cheap way of adding sugar and it is difficult to see how it is healthier Other than not containing phosphates.

  • So can the "natural" San pelligrino limonata at ph3 .
  • I'm a 45 year old coke fan(real coca cola that is) and have been drinking the stuff all my life. I have no health troubles and only a single filling from about 3 or 4 decades ago.
Reading all the horror stories, i.e cleaning the loo with it etc I can't help thinking that if you like it, then drinking in moderation(a good tactic for any food or drink) is the way to go. I have 3 to 4 cans a week and don't drink any other pop.
  • It's interesting how some posters cite the sugar content in fizzy flavoured water and juices.
Fresh orange juice may contain sugar yes, but it's natural sugar. So long as you don't drink gallons of the stuff, your body will cope just fine with natural sugars, as I would suggest they are healthy.
Me thinks too many people see this recent fad with "no sugar" means all sugars when that is quite simply bad advice.
Plus, if you've been out on a lake or near the sea, coca cola can be good at assisting in the killing of any nasties you may have ingested.
  • There is chemically and in every other way no difference between "natural" and "unnatural" sugar. Your body uses them in exactly the same way.
The average person under 65 gets the largest proportion of their daily sugar intake from drinks. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-27941325 On average a British person eats 238 spoonfuls of sugar a week.
Indeed fructose sugar (the sugar found in fruit) is the sweeter of choice in many junk foods as it is cheap to produce.
There is absolutely no good or bad sugars, just sugar.
  • Jej you are confusing sugar with Sweeteners, the discussion was about sugar from different sources not comparing sugar with sweetener.
OP was arguing sugar from a natural source eg fruit juice was different and healthier than what I presume is refined white sugar. The truth is no matter where the sugar comes from the body uses it the same and the sugar is just as healthy or unhealthy no matter what the source. There is no healthier , "natural" type of sugar.
