A question about : Entitled to Warm Home Discount but Moving...

Hey everyone.

We're currently with British Gas. We're entitled to the Warm Home Discount but we're currently in the process of moving to a new home. The suppliers for the new home are EDF. We want ti stay with British Gas but have had to sign up with EDF to say we've moved in etc. Both the Gas and Electricity are also on pre-payment meters, whereas we're on a credit meter at the moment (I'm hoping to get them changed to credit meters in the new home.)

What happens with regards to the Warm Home Discount? If I recall correctly, the T&Cs say that you need to stay with the same supplier but we'll be changing and then moving back again so not sure if it'll be classed that we have stayed with the same supplier or not, if that makes sense?

  • When are you moving? Is it possible to call BG to start taking over the supply? It may also be possible that the money has already been credited to your account. If not they may be able to allow it if they can see a sale has been done to bring the supply back again. No guarantees though.
  • Are you part of the core group who receive it from the DWP? If so then the payment will reach BG by March 31 at which point you will need to contact them and request a cheque.
    If you form a part of the broader group who are paid directly by BG then chances are you will no longer receive it as this is a scheme run and administered by BG.
  • Not much help but the official line is if you change suppliers, you loose it as you have to be with the suppler you applied to during winter. Moving to a house with a different supplier contradicts that even though it takes about 3 weeks to switch.
    More lies from a government who encourage consumers to switch but put the handcuffs on when its money from them. Suppose this is the backhander the companies get for administering the scheme as they don't trust dole scum to use the money for energy.

    Hi All. I wonder if anyone can help please. I received my payment last week and today have been offered a council house and have to move in by 5th March. Does anyone know is you can transfer the balance? I currently have a key meter but not sure what the new place has yet. I'm with Swalec if that helps

  • As Joyful says above, once the money has been applied, it is yours.
    I'd let Swalec know what's happening and see what their policy is for credit on meters when you move out.
    On the day you move, take a reading from the meter, as well as a note of how much credit was remaining. (Photos wouldn't hurt).
    Phone Swalec with the readings and ask about getting your refund.
    If your new property is also with Swalec, they may be able to transfer the credit to your new account.

  • What normally happens with key meters is that you contact your supplier 48 hours prior to the move date and they then tell you that as you leave the property you insert your key into the meter and it will transfer the funds off on to the key.
    When you get to your new property, check to see if the previous tenants have left any credit on and use that up first (free electricity), phone your energy supplier agagin and give them the new meter serial nember, then insert your key. This will then set-up the meter and transfer the credit back to the meter.
    Well, at least thats what my son had to do when he moved.
