A question about : Electric central heating.

Please can any one help. We are looking into a new central heating system that is infra red, and they claim that it will reduce heating bills by half. Also there are no pipes. They just plug in. Really would appreciate any advice related to these.

  • This subject has been discussed to death on the site, try the search function.
General consensus on here is that they are no more efficient than a Ј10 heater from Argos, but they heat the objects in the room instead of using the air to convect the heat.
If you do want a more efficient heater, take a look at air to air heat pumps instead, they actually can reduce your costs by 50%

I appreciate that you are new to the forum, but if you click 'forum search' at the top of the page and search for infra red you will find literally hundreds of posts on the subject. This thread is just one example:

A problem that is not confined to just infra red heaters is that heating systems are marketed as if they have 'invented the wheel' and have an electrical system that produces more heat for the same running costs as other systems - and they don't - they unequivocally don't!
What is more they can charge hundreds, even thousands of pounds for heaters that produce no more heat, for the same running cost, as a Ј10 fan heater from Argos.
Infra-red does have uses, say heating one person in a room. However if you want to try it get a very cheap IR heater - google.
