A question about : Does Anyone Check Wills Free or for Low Cost?

So, I've used an online will-writing service, but want to be sure that it's watertight - does anyone know of anywhere that will check a document for free or very little?

Or maybe if I posted it here, someone wouldn't mind casting an eye?

Best answers:

  • I do not know of such a service. If the situation is that critical why did you not go to a solicitor?
You could post it here and ask an anonymous group of strangers who are either not experts, or you cannot confirm their competence, to express a view about a professional will writing service. You will probably get some useful opinions but why would you rely on them?
Or you could just go to a solicitor and say why you are concerned with the will you have. You may get a solicitor who just says that looks fine to me. But they will almost certainly be able to suggest a potential flaw in the wording and ask if you want them to write a better will.
  • Solicitors make a fortune out of homemade wills.
  • You're not going to get one professional person to check on the work of another professional person without charging you.
If you had your car repaired in ABC garage and suspected they'd made a mistake, would you expect to be able to take it to the DEF garage down the road and have them inspect it for free ?
  • How much do you mean by 'very little'? If it's uncomplicated, you may well be able to get a solicitor or professional will writer to assist for around Ј100. Not sure you'll get anything much below that, though: as pointed out by previous posters, you're basically trying to get professional services for free/below cost.
If someone who's actually qualified to do so has a look at it and okays it for you/tells you what amendments needs making, they're opening themselves up to someone making a negligence claim against them if a mistake emerges after you die. There'd be no benefit in it for them, only risk. So unless you happen to have a friend who's a solicitor and willing to do you a favour, you're unlikely to get what you're after. And if you want someone who isn't qualified to do it to have a look, there's kind of not much point really. Really, when it comes to wills you pays your money (or doesn't) and takes your choice. You can have free or you can have reliable, but unless you've got a generous professional will writer friend you can't have both.
  • Even trying is probably flawed.
    Professional indemnity.
One thing with wills is lawyers like to use their own/legally tested wording that they know they are covered for.
  • Well I don't know if I count as sensible, but I certainly wouldn't! But I know people have been known to do favours for friends, wisely or otherwise.
I must say though, with wills, how much cheaper do people want them to be? Seriously. If you're anywhere near a big city and your estate is fairly uncomplicated, you should be able to get one done for just into three figures. That is not a huge amount considering how important a will is, and how much it can cost when one goes wrong. I appreciate that some people just do not have Ј100 however good a deal it is, and I sympathise, but equally I don't think everyone seeking the cheapest option falls into that category either. People need to bear in mind they're paying for the comeback as much as the drafting.
  • Wills are usually done on a fixed fee these days anyway, everywhere I've worked at least.
