A question about : CSCS Card

My son completed a college course CSkills Awards Level 2 Diploma in Site Carpentry (Construction) (QCF) and passed the exam in June 2014. He has been working using his carpentry skills in a nightclub. Firstly building a new bar area and then maintenance.

He is hoping to get a job using and expanding on his carpentry skills. He did the CSCS test in summer 2014 but has just applied for a skilled persons CSCS card, as recommended by them.

Today he had a phone call to say he could only have a provisional CSCS card which is for three years because he didn't have an NVQ.

He is very disappointed at this. Aren't the CSkills in place of NVQ? He can't understand why after doing the course and being told to apply for the skilled CSCS card he can't have one. Anyone know whats going on?

Best answers:

  • If he had level three then that is NVQ level and he needs to be working with an employer to get this. He will still get on sites with this cscs card but he is only partly qualified.
  • Tell him to look for small sites and council refurb projects as they don't tend to ask for a CSCS card (I am speaking from pers. exp. here).
I have a green card (obtained before they changed the classifications late last year) so this allows me to undertake any role on site that I wish to.
The only sites I have been asked to produce my card on, were the ones run by the big developers such as Taylor-Wimpey and Barrats.
Anyway, QCFs are the replacement for NVQs. NVQs are no longer obtainable in certain subjects and are being phased-out and replaced with the international QCF instead.
