A question about : Crown Currency: Where has my money actually gone?

Hi

I did my bank transfer on the 1st October for some currency but Barclay's froze their accounts on the 29th September. Do you know where my money would be sitting as it hasn't bounced back into my account and do you think there is a good chance I will get it back?

Thanks

  • That is one heck of a good question Katie and I wouldn't stop trying to find the answer to it if I was you...
You could start by walking into your nearest Barclays and asking them.
Keep us posted, that's very interesting...
  • Personally if I was you I would get in contact with your bank and ask them, then I'd go to Barclays if my own bank couldn't tell me. Hopefully you'll get your money back. I paid out for my currency in August so don't have much hope.
  • It will sit in the receivers banks suspended account with your reference details on, and normally would return to your bank automatically.... Maybe a case of ringing both banks....
Had this happen to me ages ago (not with CCE!)
  • My bank (First Direct) confirm my payment to Crown went 10.30 29/9/2010 via Faster Payments, being accepted by Barclays at 13.30.
What time did Barclays suspend the account? What else can I do to try and get my money back?
  • I thought I read somewhere it was 2 pm but don't know for sure.
  • Barclays didnt freeze the account of cce until Sat 2nd as far as I'm aware, and it seems were accepting payments into the accounts on the 1st Oct, even though they knew about the situation it stinks,
  • I'm in a similar position here. I did a Bank transfer from my HBoS account and the money went out on the 30th, not sure what time. The type of transfer I used takes 3-5 working days allegedly and, so far, hasn't bounced back.
From a different thread on this subject, the following was written :
"On Wednesday 29th September, Peter Benstead of Crown Currency Exchange (CCE) arranged a meeting with Barclays Bank.
Mr Benstead advised Barclays that CCE was insolvent. Shortly after this meeting Barclays froze the company’s bank accounts with a Ј2 million credit balance in order to protect consumers."
So, if the accounts were frozen 'shortly after the meeting on the 29th', it all depends how 'shortly' has been defined. I would have taken it to be the next day, at least, and certainly not the weekend, as has also been suggested.
Why can't Barclays give a definitive date and time on this and tell people whether or not their funds were accepted before the freeze?
  • His (Benstead) statement to "The Cornishman" also said he had paid staff 3 months in advance "As they did not have a wages clerk" Well, he paid them with our money...I wonder how much he paid himself & wife..."In advance" ???
  • My money left my First Direct account on Friday 1 Oct (first thing I imagine). I rang the bank at 1pm and the money had been returned by Barclays
  • Yes this is important, I paid on wedsnesay 29th hwoever it went via bacs, 3 - 5 days so they should of got it on friday, but what would happen if there account is suspended as nothing has appeared back in my bank account yet.
