A question about : Cost of combi boiled and gas piped to house

I have just had a quote from British Gas to have a new combi boiler and gas piping to the house (I currently have oil fueled heating). The quote was for around Ј3,500 (Ј460 for the piping to the house & the rest for the new boiler, removal of old system tanks, radiator flush etc).

This seems a bit steep to me has anyone else had this done recently?

I live in the Midlands area.

  • British Gas will always quote top prices for a job, often contracting the work out to a local plumber. I/we had ours done December 03, got 3 quotes:
    British Gas- pushing Ј4000.
    Fairly large local firm Ј2500-3000.
Independant plumber recommended by colleague Ј2000.
    Guess who did the job
Except that we decided to have bathroom done at same time and that ended up costing more anyway. But he did only charge an extra Ј230 to install it. Also mentioned that British Gas had asked him to be on their register of installers, but preferred to work for himself.
Job involved replacing larger diameter pipe from meter to boiler, removing old boiler and fitting new one, 3 new radiators and fitting towel rail, removing old water cistern.
  • If you are still looking for a combi boiler, www.mrcentralheating.com will give you
a good quote. Then find a local plumber to fit it.
  • Dear old Worcester Bosch gave me the names of 3 local Corgi installers who could replace my 20+ yr old gas boiler with a new condensing one - not a difficult job, I thought... Given that the boiler is Ј600+VAt on the net the first quote has come in at Ј2000 + VAT; o.k. it may involve a "power flush" and removing the expansion tank, and there's the notional cost of an installer's Corgi membership, but this is over the top, isn't it, for a 2yr warranty of the installation as the boiler's warranted by Bosch for 2 yrs anyway? I'd like a more efficient boiler, but at these prices I can't see how I'll recoup the outlay. Are you monitoring, Worcester Bosch?
  • I had a new boiler installed in May (Glasgow) and I got a quote from British Gas of Ј2700which was only a traditional boiler. I checked the corgi web site for registered gas fitters in my area and got quotes off a few for a combi boiler and the cheapest one I got was Ј1291 and this was a baxi, so it definitely pays to shop around. Iactually phoned British Gas to inform them that they were too expensive and had priced themselves out the market but the bloke at the other end of thephone didn't seem too bothered.....
  • our combi Worcester/Bosch only had 12 months warranty.
