A question about : Company refusing to interview current employees family member

Hello all

My wife works in a warehouse for a company. They are advertising for two more warehouse / storeman roles and her father applied.

They have rejected giving him an interview as it is a new policy not to interview family members of existing employees. No reason for why that is was given

My question is surely this cannot be legal and is discriminatory. I've googled but cannot find anything specific.

If it is illegal i would really like proof if anyone can find it.

Thanks for your help

Best answers:

  • Can not see any law they are breaking there.
Lots of companies will not allow you to date another member of staff for security reasons and this may be the same here too.
  • If its a policy there isn't much you can do other than have her Father apply using their non family procedure. He may or may not get the job, but at least that way it will be amongst other equals.
  • ok thanks for the feedback everyone!
  • Look at it as their bad? their embarrassing hire choice may not work out..
Had a company today who made it clear they probably wouldn't want to interview me, not least as a preferred choice, as knock me down I had a job interview 2 whole years ago through an agency, stuff like that I say ah, let them get on with it and thanks perhaps for not wasting my time again; I've more respect for myself
  • Some firms won't interview peple who have worked for them previously, or have left but re-applied within a certain time-frame.
I guess they must have their reasons for not wanting to have family members working for them, but then that's the rules they play by.
  • I had it the other way round with me.
I applied for a role at a company where a school friend worked and there were three of the same roles.
The only ones that got interviews were candidates that were related to current employees.
So what was the point of advertising externally?
