A question about : Code for free SkySports, ESPN & SkyNews for three months on O2 iPhone

OFFICIAL/ What's this about?

Mobile users with an O2 iPhone (contract or pay-as-you-go) can watch live sport and news on their handset for free for three months. You can easily cancel when the free period is up or pay Ј6/month to continue viewing.

However, the free offer is only available to the first 150,000 O2 iPhone customers who apply, so be quick, otherwise it costs Ј6 per month.

/ What's included?

You'll get Premiership and Champions League football as the package includes Sky Sports (1,2,3 & Xtra), ESPN, Sky Sports News, At The Races and Sky News. Yet you'll only be able to watch these current channels when connected to a Wi-Fi network, not via your phone's 3G network.

We asked if more channels would be available in future. A Sky spokeswoman said: There may be more in future. But we don't know much more than that.

/ Are you tied into a long term contract?

No. You can cancel at any time. However, you're charged at the start of every month for the following 31 days' viewing (if outside the free period) so if you cancel the day after payment is taken you won't get your money back.

Your month doesn't necessarily start on the first of the month. It begins on the day of the month you sign-up.

Warning! Ensure you cancel on time if you only want the free trial

If you are just doing this for the freebie, ensure you put a date in your diary and cancel at least 24 hours before your first three months is up otherwise you'll be charged Ј6/month. You can cancel via your iPhone.

/ Step-by-step guide to getting it free

Step 1. Download the Sky Mobile TV app from the App store on your device.
Step 2. Text SKY to 2020 (the text is free) to get a promotional code.
Step 3. The code should arrive by text (mine took an hour). When it does, go into the Sky Mobile TV app on your phone and follow the sign-up instructions. Crucially, you must enter the code in the 'promotional code' box and press 'recalculate' to redeem the offer, or you'll pay Ј6 per month.
Step 4. Enter your credit/debit card details and complete the sign-up process to create your Sky Mobile TV account (you will not be charged if you correctly sign-up).
Step 5. To watch TV on your device, log into your account and connect to an available Wi-Fi network.
Step 6. To cancel your account, log-in and choose the 'stop auto renew' option. Remember, you need to give at least 24 hours' notice before a payment is due or you'll be charged.

/ What if you have a problem?

A few O2 customers who signed up on Tuesday got an incorrect code. However, Sky has promised all codes sent from 6pm on Tuesday are fine.

If you had a code sent before then which did not work, Sky says you should get a replacement by early Wednesday at the latest, though most should have already arrived.

If you have a problem with the code call O2 on 2302 (free for contract customers, 25p per call on pre-pay). Business customers should call 8002 (for free).

If you've a problem with your viewing, call Sky on 0844 2411531. This is a premium rate line so see the Say no to 0870 guide to cut costs.

/ What's the quality like?

When I tested it, the picture quality was excellent. There is a slight delay (a minute or so when I tried), so if you're watching a big football match you may hear the cheering from your neighbours before the ball hits the net on your screen!

  • Awesome, great TIP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Many many thanks, picture quality is awesome
  • Its a great deal but you do have to enter you card details when you sign up and they don't accept Maestro which for me is very annoying.
  • Just tried to sign up for this and when i filled out my financial details it still kept telling me i had to create a SKY payment account. phoned SKY twice and they then confirmed there was a technical problem with the " Mobile Wallet " and technicians were working on it and to try again in an hour. I got her to put a note on my file in case my promo code wasnt vallid as i wont be able to try agin until this evening.
  • So, it seems there is nothing to stop someone with a jailbroken iPhone to install an app such as TV-Out, and use it in conjunction with an Apple AV cable to watch Sky Sports on a normal TV. The quality would be so-so but still watchable.
As it is wi-fi only this of course doesn't take additional broadband bandwidth costs into account, though of course you could lug your LCD TV down to Starbucks I suppose!. At Ј6 versus Ј40 a month, could Sky be about to shoot themselves in the foot?
  • At the payment page, I get this message:
"You will be charged Ј0.00 for this sevice for the first 3 period(s) and Ј6.00 for each period thereafter. Your subscription period is 1 month."
    - Does that mean I will be charged for 1 months service even if I cancel before the initial three month trial ends?

  • I've just put it on my iPhone, fantastic quality and free for three months!
  • I`m watching the news on it just now. Great picture quality, very pleased with it....shame its only sports and news, would have loved the movie channels
  • i posted this two hours earlier in the freebies section

  • I meant to ask....if we sign up today would we need to make sure we cancel by 10th feb 2010?
Also do you know you can get free bbc1, bbc2, Itv1,channel 4,channel 5, itv2, bbc 3, film4, E4, more4, and 4music? You can get them via wifi or over 3g when your out and about and the picture quality is great.
Like i said, its a free service for the iphone and just point your browser on your phone to iphone.tvcatchup.com/
I realise its probably been posted before but no harm in reminding everyone.....after all it is free!!
  • How far behind do the channels run with the ITV, E4 website?
I tried E4 and it was completely different to whats on now, and ITV had the same people on, just a different section.
  • still getting 'the activation code provided is not valid please re-enter'. i thought all codes from 6pm last night were supposed to be ok.
  • I signed up for this last night, works great!
    Excellent quality
  • Just signed up and got the 3 months free. Good stuff. Checked out the footie being shown on ESPN and the picture is pretty good. Can now watch all the action anywhere at home and in wifi areas.
  • Far from happy....
Have subscribed to this, as confirmed in my account, but when I try to watch any channels, it simply states that I need to subscribe, and directs to the relevant page to do so..... which tells me that I've already subscribed!
Have tried countless times to phone them about this today... just keep getting the annoying hold music, and have as yet been unable to actually speak to anyone! Must have been on hold for up to 15 minutes on occasion before giving up!
Would be understandable if it was a freephone number, but it's an 0844 number - not cheap! (saynoto0844 doesn't help)
Any advice anyone? Don't think I'm alone with this problem.
  • Everyone is our office has signed up for it without a problem. You sure you followed updated the page once you put in the code?
  • Even works pukka without wi-fi
  • |I've just had a text giving me an alternative code to use if i've had problems with the one they sent (which i did)
that new code worked fine, and i'm now streaming.... if you're having problems, and already got a code that doesn't work, i'm sure you'll get a code that does work right via text quite soon
