A question about : cheapest way to get married abroad

we want to get married abroad, to have a fairly low key affair, can't be bothered with the whole pleasing family with lavish wedding affair. Limited funds so as cheap as poss. Any ideas where to go?, who to book with and how we go about it.
Thanks in advance
Oh in August this year

  • We got hitched in New Yorklast year , just me and mrsD.
Same as you didn't want the stress/hassle etc.
The whole wedding cost probably around Ј4 grand, including a party when we got home afterwards. Might sound a lot but I've read somewhere that the typical wedding now costs something like Ј15 grand or something like that.
We did it through a travel agent, there was a wedding coordinator in NY that arranged everything for us when we got over there, i.e marriage license etc. You could probably do it cheaper by arranging things yourself, but be aware there are some strange laws etc, so in my opinion the package is a safer bet
It was really good, best way I could think of doing it, got some fab memories.
If you want any more info, please let me know
  • We are doing it in Florida, not sure of cost yet but will be about Ј5k i hope, we too are using one of the wedding packages and co-ordinater as altho it works out more expensive than booking things individually yourself, its less hassle and they have been doing it for years so know what they are talking about. Kuoni are very good for long haul.
My friend got married in Rhodes last year, went with first choice, my other friend used lindosweddings.co.uk, they have a co-ordinator called karen and she was amazing, the loved the whole day, the pics are fab. Do a google search for lindosweddings. Think the wedding package cost about Ј1k and then accom and flight on top, but the Ј1k inc ceremony and flowers, and also hair and make up package.
    Good luck and congrats
  • Found this one in florida, we are thinking of going here when we renew our vows

    Flights etc would be extra

  • Thanks Kyle that link is great
  • My sister got married in a 5* hotel in the dominican last year. It was booked with direct holidays and cost Ј1700 for the 2 of them plus Ј500 on top for the wedding package (plus it's not too expensive if guests are coming). If i had my time again i would definately do it this way. It was totally relaxed - infact we were all still sunbathing an hour and a half before the wedding! The wedding co-ordinator was fantastic and took care of everything, nothing was too much trouble. There was a hairdresser & beauty therapist & masseur at the hotel. The hotel she got married at was the iberostar costa dorada .Gosh I really wanna to get married again!

  • 9 years and 6 days ago! Dh and I married in New York on the 102nd floor of the empire state building. We had us, and 4 others with us, they gave us a bottle of bubbly to celebrate, and lots of ESB certificates and stuff, and a free entry next time we go back!
I know it's a long time ago, but we spent 7 nights in new york, 10 in Florida for our honeymoon, paid the ESB and a judge, and I think all of that cost less than Ј3k.
We had one of the people with us take photos in central park, and @ ESB.
It was a fantastic day - people clapping and cheering that you've never met - (and never will again!) yellow cabs hooting when they see you all dressed up. I can honestly say, that all made the day extra special for us.
  • Try this!!!
    https://www.gibraltar.gov.uk/hol/What...ng_married.asp
Thats where we are going....just phone the reg office direct...book a date...book a cheap holiday...take birth certificates and passport....Job Done!!!!
  • I have to say my money would be on Italy for ease and cheapness of travel and general beauty of the area. There's a raft of websites offering marriage help - if you google you can find them. That way too if you wanted a couple of special people to be there they could
Otherwise what's wrong with gretna green? Seriously Scotland in August can be beautiful too, you could just head off and do it and announce it when you get back
    Good luck!
  • I have 2 colleagues who are both getting married (not to each other) in Turkey at the Blue Lagoon. Apparently it's THE place to be hitched now and very cheap.
I haven't been myself so can't comment on Turkey as a holiday place, but you're pretty sure of good weather, a short flight and if you did want to invite others, it won't break the bank for them.
    Try these links .. https://www.chiff.com/recreation/beac...ey-beaches.htm
    https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractio...niz_Mugla.html
The 2nd link actually shows a review of someones marriage ceremony there.
Have a good time wherever you go and remember that certain countries ask that you are there for at least a certain number of days before registering the ceremony. I got married in Nashville and had to be there 3 days before going to the civic hall place.
    Best wishes
  • Hi,
I got married in Cyprus last year, and after doing a lot of searching about before hand, came to the conclusion that all-in, its probably the easiest and cheapest place to get wed in the world.
The actual wedding costs about Ј200 (a bit less..i cant remember exactly) We had a flashy two week stay in an all-inclusive hotel (so, you could stay cheaper if you wanted...rent an appartment or something..and have your honeymoon night in a flashy hotel) I had an averagely priced wedding dress and all the trimmings, he had a lovely hired wedding suit, we had 10 family members come over with us (no friends were invited...that was the whole reason of doing it abroad for us... we've got far too many friends and we didnt want a mahoooosive wedding in the Uk that we'd be paying off for 60 years!) we had a lovely reception/meal with our guests in a gorgeous local restaurant... the whole shebang cost us about Ј3.5k (and the overwhelming majority of that price was the actual holiday) We went through Olympic holidays.... if i did it again i would def NOT do it through a holiday company, i would organise it all myself (i pretty much did all that anyway!) They organised my wedding day transport and gorgeous flowers, cake etc etc. There is a brilliant website dedicated just to Cyprus weddings... it has everything you need to know about organising your own wedding in Cyprus, let me know if you want the address.
  • We are considering Jamaica, Dominican Rep or Mexico in 2009....have never wanted big white wedding thing. My mates UK wedding cost 20k which I think is extortionate...am looking to do it for about 5k, and have a big party when we come home. mates of mine got married in Vegas and then had black tie candlelit party in a castle with a tribute band...was a fab night. they only took 2 people with them on their wedding/honeymoon - the best man and bridesmaid whom they paid for.
  • hi. we got married in las vegas (due to big pressure of big wedding in the uk and rows over who is footing the bill.........)
Its not everyones cup of tea but we had a wild time.
flights are relatively cheap considering the distance. (around 300.00)
accommodation is dirt cheap for the quality (we stayed at the flamingo which is opposite caesars but around the price of a uk travelodge, great pools great location).
16 friends came with us, they paid for themselves as their holiday that year. budget ceremony at the little white chapel (around 200.00 pounds with vhs video and 16 photos- they just give you the film to get developed yourself.lush private reception in private dining room at 'top of the world' at the stratosphere with AMAZING views. we footed the bill for all the champers and food for the whole night, cost around 800 pounds to a grand for the 18 of us, if i remember. on the morning of the wedding the guys went bungee jumping (hmmmmmm) and the girls went to a spa .....cheap cheap cheap!
I would totally recommend it but like i say its what you fancy.
we had a party when we got back, for the 150 people that would have been at the 'original' uk wedding, this evening reception alone cost 3 grand which was probably more than vegas......spends included!!!
    good luck and enjoy!
  • Hi we were on holiday in Turkey Olu Deniz and a couple got married on the lagoon she said it was lovely got married at sunset and she said it was reasonably priced.
  • we're getting married in vegas on 15th June. Marriage ceremony is $199. License is $55. ministers tip is $50 so is a couple of hundred UKP
We were going there anyway as part of a round the world trip we're doing so haven't got the flights factored into the cost.
Will be just me and Oh and the 2 kids. Fantastic. Can't wait now
  • Why not get married in a registry office and then have a nice holiday? The actual wedding won't cost more than a couple of hundred!
Or failing that, as someone else said, Gibraltar or Gretna.
I personally would consider even five grand spent on a wedding a waste of money, let alone £20k. It will be just as legal if you pay less!
