A question about : Cheapest place to buy hypoallergenic dog food?

In a bid to calm down the stupid spaniel we've been told to try hypoallergenic dog food.
What is the cheapest / best way of buying this please as we have 2 of them to feed
Thanks x

Best answers:

  • Have you had a look on zooplus?
  • Most dog food manufacturers do a hypoallergenic version, so its just a matter of finding one to suit and then finding the cheapest supplier.
If you are in a rural area try the agricultural suppliers, they are often the cheapest and will usually pricematch.
    I currently use this:
    https://www.skinnerspetfoods.co.uk/st...ogs/duck-rice/
It seems to be one of the best at a reasonable price.
Don't just change the food though. You must also be careful with treats and make sure they are hypoallergenic too.
Also do not give them any leftovers that include any processed food or anything with additives (ie, if you do give them left overs, then only plain meat or veg).

  • Would you consider a raw diet?
    Tends to work out cheaper.
Otherwise I use Barking Heads. It is expensive but the ingredients are superb and would likely change your dog's behaviour.
Do not go for Working Dog Food or Bakers or Pedigree as that is where the problems start!
If you wanted to use a supermarket food either Chappie or Butchers is supposed to be a better quality (but by no means the best!)
  • I buy Royal Canin vet diet from Pet Meds and I think it works out really reasonably.
  • I would agree to go for the Skinners Field and trial range too although I would only use the Duck & Rice, Salmon & Rice or Turkey & Rice I don't think the other are hypoallergenic plus IMHO the ingredients aren't as good either.
They really are excellent quality & value for the price.
I definitely wouldn't worry about them being a working dog food as the protein levels etc should be fine for most pet dogs.

have a look on here, at the moment I'm using Fishmongers, you can get it from Pets at Home
  • Hi
My dogs really suffered on most other well known brand dog foods, one had mucky ears the other was itching and chewing her feet. So i went on a hunt for an affordable hypoallergenic dog food. I came across this website
    puregoldpetfood
Mine have been on the large breed chicken and rice and the fish with allergy x and i havent looked back. Even better they do free delivery and the service is quick.
    Hope this helps others.
  • Have you had any blood tests done to find out exactly what your spaniel is allergic to? If you haven't it's going to be very difficult to find a food that suits, tbh. A fellow member of a springer forum has had great results with her springer feeding Dave and Barney's but she'd had the tests done, so knew what she needed to avoid.
What are you feeding currently, how old and what type of spaniel do you have and how and how long are you exercising?
  • Must say I'm a tad puzzled as to why a hypoallergenic food would calm a dog down.
As has been mentioned, what food is your dog currently on ?,as some commercial foods, due to their poor ingredients, can cause , so called hyperactive behaviour, Bakers Complete, being the prime example.
Some dogs can be sensitive to corn/ maize, corn gluten, prairie meal, (which is more or less the same thing) I would be looking for these ingredients first, if it is actually the food that's causing the behaviour.
  • My dogs on Burns Potato and Pork Sensitive ++, I buy it from Petshopbowl, free and quick delivery.
  • Great value and quality - our dogs love it! little-chompers.co.uk/[/url]
  • My springer spaniel puppy is on james wellbeloved a bag that costs 9 pounds last him just over a fortnight so not too bad hes doing well on it and they do different flavours mine will eat anything but lamb.

  • You could try Autarky Salmon and Rice - it seems to be about the cheapest decent hypo-allergenic food around.

The above is about the cheapest small bag with free delivery but Berriewood or GJ Titmuss are usually cheaper for the 15kg bags.
  • Arden grange? Not too expensive either!
Try Berriewoods as they usually have free delivery 12kg is about Ј30
  • Skinners and Arden Grange would be two of the best. The companies are also very helpful in sending samples. Protein levels are quite low.
Is it a Springer? What is it currently fed and it's exercise regime?
  • Not sure if it a hypoallergenic food will calm your dog down but I think that its best to feed it anyway. You can get some really decent dry dog food for cheap nowdays. May seem more expensive than the likes of supermarkets own makes or pedigree but you feed less. You see the likes of bakers pack their food full of cereals and crap and all kinds of colouring and other nasties that your dog doesn't need and may cause health issues. Since your dog doesn't need cereal in his diet he will just get rid of it via waste (poop haha). But you need to feed more to fill them up.
Think of it as the same as humans we are told to have correct portions of food like so much protein, veg and carbs. If we just ate carbs we be full for about 30mins and then be hungry again as we need protein in our diet to fill us up.
Skinners Duck and Rice and Autarky Salmon are you best bet. Email the companies asking for samples for free. Skinners are great btw. I'd defo ask for free samples as my partner bought his family dog Autarky Salmon and Rice and she didn't like it. So we got samples from Skinners Duck and Rice and she loves that but doesn't like the fish flavour from Skinners.
Buying in bulk is the cheapest as well.
