A question about : Change Of Hours In Work

I have worked at the same company for 22 years and last week my boss called me in the office to say he wanted to change my hours. I currently work 4am - 12pm and 12pm - 8pm Monday to Friday, so days one week then afternoons the next week. He wants me to work 4am - 12pm permanently and work 6am - 6pm every fourth Sunday which I won`t get paid for as I am on salary. I told him last week that I can`t work 12 hours during the weekend as I look after my mum and I don`t want to work permanent days. Surely I have got some rights after 22 years with the same company and is there some sort of law regarding looking after someone.
I will be grateful for as much help as possible.
Thanks in advance for any replies

Best answers:

  • Will working the extra hours for free take you below minimum wage?
  • Working the extra hours won't take me below the minimum wage but I cant work 12 hours at the weekend like previously stated and I am afraid no amount of negotiations seem likely to change his mind. As for contract of employment I can't ever remember signing one of those.
He has also told me that if I don't agree then he may make my job redundant. I really do need some urgent help regarding the law to where I stand with it. It also doesn't help that my boss is a bully and we have had words in the past about his bullying and even other people have asked what have I done for him to be so horrible towards me which I don't know, but if he needs something doing urgently then I am the first person he asks as he knows I am good at my job and can guarantee that whatever he asks me to do, I do it and always to a high standard. He has his favourites who creep up to him and I think that's what he doesn't like about me.
  • As you are a carer, you are covered under the Equality Act 2010. I suggest you ring ACAS and speak to one of their advisors regarding your situation and the best way to approach your boss about it.
    Best of luck.

  • He cant make you redundant,he has to make the job redundant but the job clearly exists. Even more so if he requires you to work extra hours, stupid man.
Stand your ground, it is the only way to make bullies back down.
  • Redundant means the job no longer exists.
It clearly does, so let him do his worst and then slap him with an Tribunal.
That'll take the wind out of his sails.
  • The boss took me in the office yesterday and said I have had over a week and he needs an answer by tomorrow. I told him that this is not what I want and he said the altei is another job but it would be a drop of Ј8,000. Getting up 3am for the rest of my life is horrible just thinking about it and as I am not getting any younger it means there is a bigger chance of me over-sleeping now and again, plus the other shift are nowhere near as good as my cshift which I have been on for 22 years, and this has come from the shift manager on other shift who blatantly admits they are a nightmare.
I feel I have no option to accept it but I really don't want to plus I have told him I have still no-one to look after my mum which he doesn't care about. Have they got to give me 00 days notice to change my hours and can they just drop my pay like that after 22 years. I am being bullied into a job I really don't want to do plus I can't do the Sunday's but I have got about 8 hours before I get taken in office again. I don't know what to do, any help would be most grateful.
Thank You Very Much for all the replies so far, really appreciated.
