A question about : Can someone help me in clearing my Credit Card Quicker?

I have a credit card in my name, unfortunately it was maxed over the years by the second card holder, now my ex.
Ive been paying it off mostly alone for years but because the interest is so high the balance it barely coming down, I pay the min each month as thats all I can afford and its usually between 52-56 quid a month, but about Ј40 of that is just interest I think, the min has gradually come down over the yrs but Im still gonna be paying this damn thing off for years! and its not even my debt (hate him)

Plus I forgot to pay this month and now I owe double next month and will get a fee on top of that! I didn't realise before I could set up a direct debit, which I will do now if I keep things as they are

I did apply for a 0% balance transfer about a yr ago but got declined.
Im gonna try again but dont really understand it all, I pay a fee right? and then what I pay off each month actually brings the balance down? I'm not sure if I could afford the initial fee, but I guess it would be well worth it in the long run? Is it as simple this?

  • Well, if you applied a year ago and was rejected, then it was an unforgivable mistake to miss a payment.

  • Thanks for the reply Grumbler, its taken a while to get back on track with this,
Ive been looking at some of the 0% balance transfer cards suggested on here but a bit worried about what the min payment would be, there doesnt seem to be a way of finding this out before applying?
I currently dont want to commit to more than Ј55 a month, the balance is currently at Ј2,329
Looking at a Halifax card 0% for up to 34 months 2.8% fee
Can anyone shed some light on if I would end up paying a higher minimum payment than what I pay now?
  • Who do you bank with? Probably best to go through them, or a more generous lender like BarclayCard.
Even if the fee is added on top, depending on your current interest rate, after 1-2 months you'll have already saved the fee in what you would've paid in interest.
  • Go on the eligibility checker on the mse site.
It will give you a list of cards you are likely to be eligible for.
Don't worry, your monthly payment won't be more than you are currently paying. Not for the amount you owe it won't.
For god sake don't miss a payment on it though or you will lose the 0% offer.
  • Based on your figures if you went with the Halifax BT card, you'd be paying Ј23.29 per month minimum payment and the BT fee would be Ј65.21.
However, you state you were declined for a card a year ago, have you got copies of your credit report from all 3 agencies to see what problems there are?
Do you have any other debts? Annual salary? Debt to credit ratio?
