A question about : Can nationwide refuse to give me my money?

Hi everyone this is my first post here so I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place

My question is does nationwide or any other bank have the right to refuse to give me my money I have a short term memory problem which causes me to lose my debit cards every few months or so as Most of the time I leave them in atms or other places without realising an it can be ages before I notice.

Last time this happened last November I believe i had to have quite a barney with the cashier an the manager to get my money an they mentioned something about a non token withdraw limit? Which I had already surpassed an it took me best part of half hour to get them to give me my money despite me having all my identification. An they told me they may not be able to do this again.

if I go in the bank again an tell them I've loSt another card I'm expecting another argument which is something I would really like to avoid so before I go can someone please tell me if the bank has any right to refuse me my money it's important as I need it for a deposit on new flat I'm moving into with friends.

Sorry if that was a bit long

  • Moving to Natwest or RBS where you can use their smartphone app to get cash without your card may be an alternative solution.
  • Until they lose their smartphone!

Notify your bank via phone as soon as you recognize that you can't find your card.
Perhaps use a wallet with a set place for individual cards so that the absence of a particular card will be obvious.
Open other accounts with other account providers. Keep these cards safe at home as a backup to a computer failure/mugging/memory loss.
If you need to pay a deposit then pay by cheque. These are still useful payment items. I have lost my cards many times and my cheque book has bailed me out with Nationwide over the counter.
Most importantly, do not get angry with the banking staff. They cannot have experienced exactly what you have experienced. They must consider the possibility that you were being forced to use your card or forced to hand over the details. Perhaps your card and the pin were discovered by a family member and then used. Alternatively you divulged the details willingly and they were used/misused .

  • Hi everyone thanks for the advice I like the idea of moving to rbs or natwest as I rarely lose my phone and as for getting cheque book how long would that take I. E if I just go in to bank would iv get one today or would there be a waiting period.
I would just like to clarify when I say I had barney with bank staff I never get angry with them I just get frustrated as I understand it's not there fault. But it Just seems wrong that if I have my I.d I should be able to get my money which brings me back to the question can they flat out refuse to give me my money as they said before this is what they may do.
  • Any bank account will have conditions for withdrawals. If your account says that you can't withdraw your money without your card, then Nationwide can refuse to give you your money until you get a new card.
Some accounts don't allow any withdrawals over the counter and your only option is to use a cash machine.
  • Well that just seems wrong to me as it is my money that I work for so why do they have the ability to stop me from having it as long as I can prove I am the account holder.
    Thanks for quick answer
  • I'm sure you would be equally unhappy if they gave your money to a different person
