A question about : BR Charities to help with fees

Will be going BR as soon as possible hopefully, but have less than Ј20 to my name. CAB have advised of charities that can potentially assist with paying the OR fee (Ј500+) and I know I can have the court fees waived due to being unemployed.

The list I have has a lot of utility company's charities e.g. Severn Trent Trust Fund. From reading up on these it seems that to be eligible for help you need to be going BR with one of the relevant utilities as one of your debts (i.e. if you had a water bill unpaid or something).

I don't have an utility debts. All of my creditors (I have over 20) are loans, payday loans, credit cards, bank overdrafts etc.

What is the best charity to approach for assistance with BR fees?

Do I need to use a debt advisory company (like StepChange or PayPlan) in order to facilitate this?

I was advised BR by a BR advisor at the Royal Courts of Justice so haven't used PayPlan or StepChange for years. I have around 25k-30k unsecured debt and a mortgage with no equity and I am unemployed so BR seems the best option.

  • Hi youngbuck2,
Bankruptcy is (obviously) a big decision and it is important to take full, free and independent advice before doing this, especially if you have a mortgage property. Properties in bankruptcy can be quite a complicated issue and if you are looking to keep this at the lowest possible risk, you should take full advice before petitioning.
I understand that it can be tricky to qualify for some trust funds. I believe that British Gas has a trust fund that will help non-customers; you could look at them online at www.britishgasenergytrust.org.uk or potentially try a charity called Turn2us at www.turn2us.org.uk.
