A question about : Biomass wood pellet prices

There are threads about the prices of most off-grid energy sources on MSE, but I cannot find one about biomass wood pellets, so I thought that I would share my findings.

The below prices are for 10kg or 15kg bagged pellets on a pallet, and are either published internet prices, or phone quotes, prices include VAT at 5%. All are ENplus A1 certified -

I was surprised how much variation there is between suppliers of bagged pellets and needless to say that my latest delivery has been from Plumb Center. Price per Kw based on 4.8Kw/kg

I understand that bulk prices are lower, hopefully others will be able to add some bulk prices for comparison.

Best answers:

  • mole valley, verdo enplus 1, 10kg bags availabe from the store at Ј2.99 per bag. No storage at home needed as they always have them
whitehorse energy prices are per pallet delivered as are liverpool wood pellets. Some of the above in post 1 do not include delivery eg plumb centre delivery is Ј18. If getting RHI then the pellets must be from a certified supplier https://biomass-suppliers-list.servic...uk/find-a-fuel .
10kg bags are obviously easiest to handle, I am speaking as a 5` woman
    A useful list thozza
  • In this case the Plumb Center price INCLUDES delivery.
It is significantly less than their list price, and they will deliver for free if you are within 'range' of a depot, I am around 12 miles away.
As with all dealings with builders/plumbers merchants, be prepared to haggle.
Mole Valley have a delivery service - https://www.moleenergy.com/ but they were a similar price to buying direct from Verdo.
  • Thank you for starting this thread, I've been buying pellets for 3 years now,the price was Ј180 per tonne 3 years ago.
I have now invested in a 4 tonne hopper and purchase bulk blown pellets which are around Ј210 per tonne, not sure if its worth paying for the bulk option as the savings are minimal.
I've tried all brands of pellets and found some better than others, is anyone else willing to share their bulk price.
    Cheers
  • Bulk blown pellets are usually more expensive than bagged ones owing to the cost of delivery.
    A
  • Interesting, I had heard that bulk pellets were cheaper, somewhere under Ј200/T delivered, but there don't seem to be any readily available sources on line that publish prices.
  • I have done a small amount of digging about to try and get some prices for bulk deliveries, I made a few enquiries for the delivered price to N. Lincs of 4T of bulk pellets, the prices all came in around the Ј250-Ј260/T mark, making bagged cheaper. To me this seems counter intuitive as both need to be delivered by lorry, but perhaps pallet networks are more economic than dedicated bulk tankers?
As Robwiz says, the way to get a significantly lower price is to take a tanker full, >14T according to Verdo and they will not deliver less than this themselves, leaving smaller fills to their distributors.
Looks like bagged pellets are the way to go, certainly the pricing is more transparent, and as there are a number of 'alternative' wholesalers such as Plumb Center, PTS/Travis Perkins there is an opportunity to negotiate.
  • Another price via a colleague for bulk
Delivered price per tonne inc VAT
scheduled delivery ~ Ј255 (delivery within a few days)
shared delivery ~Ј235 (might have to wait a couple of weeks)
    This was Forever Fuels
  • I have just seen that the price of bagged pellets from Forever Fuels has also increased, and the supply source has changed
    https://www.forever-fuels.com/
Source - Pelletsfirst (Shipped from Portugal)
    Weight on pallet - 875kg
    Price per pallet - Ј249.90
    Price per tonne - Ј285.60

    Price per Kilowatt - Ј0.0595
Quite a substantial increase from Ј244.90/T previously!
Also another supplier I have found is LCEnergy:
    https://lcenergy.co.uk/
Source - Greenwood (Laois Sawmills, Ireland)
    Weight on pallet - 990kg
    Price per pallet - Ј242.00
    Price per tonne - Ј244.44

    Price per Kilowatt - Ј0.0505
They also supply Verdo, Balcas & Blazers pellets at a higher price.
  • Ј199.50 per tonne if you get from Puffin pellets in North East Scotland -good pellets and good delivery service -min 4tonne order
    frugal
  • PTS is Travis Perkins , you could try playing manager against manager
  • Ok, so I placed my first order and it was with....... Landenergy.
I had issues with all the other companies I spoke with and the sale person at Landenergy actually returned my call which was a big plus. Their lead time was good so I look forward to seeing the delivery in a couple of days. I paid Ј252 for the pallet but it was first order and I needed the material so wasn't in a good position to haggle for the few Ј.
Called my local plumb centre's and it didn't go well. One said they only sell by the bag, no pricing for pallets. The other said the brites only come in pallets of 72 and it was around Ј350 for that quantity....>

  • Thanks for starting this thread. It seems that it is very hit and miss with pellet prices. I had 2 tons of pellets delivered last week direct from brites at Ј252 per ton. The plumbcentre price looks very attractive. Have been thinking of getting a hopper for next year but will wait and see for the moment I will use about 8 tons a year so doubt it will be cost effective but might save my back!
I recently had an RHI audit where I was told that Ofgen require you to keep all invoices for pellets for the duration of the RHI payments as well as being from an authorised supplier.
BTW, Balcas brites deliver on pallets 8 bags to a layer, making the stack just over 12 bags high. The bottom ones dont appear to be crushed.
