  • wow, goanmad. whereabouts do you live?
you seriously are a true bargain hunter
  • Hey Thrifty! I live in the grotty West Midlands. Most people only seem to want Primark or River Island footballer's wives type-gear, leaving all the vintage/designer bargains for me!
I'm liking your bargains, too. That 1975 Vogue mag sounds just up my street. I recently bought a book called "House Proud" which has some amazing thifty tips for customising furniture and it has a great idea for making placemats from vintage Vogue covers. xx
  • Picked up a twice used electric breast pump today for Ј2.
Beat them down from Ј4 as they wanted rid.
    RRP Ј50
  • Wow, Goanmad, you're good at this bargain hunting lark.
Best thing I've had, I think, was a pair of oak Art Deco book-ends carved in the shape of hares, for Ј1.25.
When I went to pay,I was told the charity shop had had them for ages, but were saving them for Easter!
  • i got a avent electric sterilizer for Ј2 today from carboot
  • Car Boot bargains....
Ravel lace-up leather boots Ј1.50, barely worn - They originally said Ј2, then reduced the price as I double-checked they were my size!
Russell & Bromley sandals, boxed & as new, 50p
Several dresses, including Ghost, Monsoon etc around 50p-Ј2.
Gorgeous long fur coat (mock) Ј5
    Travel cot, Ј2
Helmet intercom (motorbiking,) 10p. Worked better than any much more expensive ones we've owned. Sadly dropped and run over,
Gortex biking jacket with armour, Ј5
    Leather jeans Ј1
    Brand new heelies, Ј2
Brand new king-size duvet cover, 20p
Numerous toys for grandchildren, none over a few quid.
These are just ones I can remember now!
  • I bought 3 Vox amps for Ј10
  • Ooooh I love these types of threads:
Ј5 pair of vintage shoes - didn't fit comfortably so sold them on ebay for Ј109
That was my fav but I've had so many that nothing else springs to mind at this minute
  • Yeah, ThriftyBelle the trendier and posher areas know their labels and fashion so I suppose the pickings aren't as rich. When I've been down to Portobello and Camden I'm amazed how much they charge for 1950's cocktail bars and Art Deco furniture. In our local British Heart Foundation charity shop they are priced at around Ј10 a piece and hang around for months whereas Ikea sofas are priced at Ј100 and sell immediately.
Grammar Girl - I kept the Hermes scarf. I'll never be able to afford one again! I'm not the world's earlier riser but my taste is so off the wall I can turn up at a car boot or jumble sale late and still snaffle a bargain!! I've also held on to the Chanel handbag and Dior belt (Ј2 and 50p respectively).
I bought 2 1950's ballgowns from a jumble sale before Xmas and paid Ј2 for both of them. An old lady told me off and said I was being ripped off and should learn to haggle more.
  • Wow, you are SO lucky! You must have a good eye too, though!
Where exactly do you go in the West Midlands for bargain shopping? I have to have some

  • I travel all over the West Midlands (but I can't give specific places away or I might get too much competition:rolleyes.
My BF and I search local newspapers (and their websites) for jumble sales, car boot sales and church fetes then log into the Charity Association website to see if there are any charity shops close by to make it worth our while to travel: www.charityshops.org.uk/
I was brought up by thrifty parents and so rummaging around jumble sales was something I was brought up with. I've got an eagle eye, takes years of training. I can almost tell a designer item by touch alone. There's a great book called "Secondhand Chic" by Christa Neil which trains you to snaffle the bargains by recognising designer and high-end stuff.
I find it a good idea to dress up in the kind of clothes I love and look distinctive and never to dress down . I was at a jumble sale the other day in my vintage leopard coat and the ladies serving kept digging out animal prints and fake fur to show me. I'm also know in local charity shops and the staff often keep quirky stuff on one side for me.
  • Hehe, that's fair enough! You must be so proud of your bargains (I am of the few I have)! Good luck to you, and thanks for info!!!

  • I love car Boot sales and Charity shops, my favourite charity shop finds are
Jean Paul Gaultier Jeans Brand new (Ј3) sold on E bay for Ј107
Vivienne Westwood T Shirt (50p) kept this as a I loved it.
There are a few massive car boot sales near me but you have to get there early for any bargains.
  • A few times I have tried to start a thread to list car boot sales but never had any response from other interested parties - its a shame as there are no really good listings sites on the net, nothing really kept up to date
  • I once picked up a lovely little Mandarin Duck bag for 50p, new and tagged...wasn't 100% sure of its value at the time, sold on eBay for Ј60
Also some LFA boots for Ј2, sold for Ј50.
Most of my clothes come from charity shops, regularly pick up Topshop jeans etc for under Ј3, I
