A question about : Bedexpress123

Don't risk it.
They offer to sell outside of ebay for a 10% reduction in price, they ask for money up front, they ask you to sign for goods before you see them. They have been lovely over the phone, but we had a problem with our bed - the fabrics didn't match and we sent photos of the problem and it is very clear in the photo, but the manager denies there is anything wrong.
We are furious. They are based in Dewsbury and we are in Tyne & wear so we can't just take it back to them for a refund without paying for a courier.
Anybody else had trouble with this company? Did they rectify any problems?
May be taking this to the small claims court if they don't refund/replace this bed.

  • We are trying. They are refusing to acknowledge a fault. They have offered a Ј25 token of apology for our trouble - which makes no sense. They are based over 111 miles away.
  • What's the timescale of when you received the item and when you first complained?
    If it's under 14 days they are legally obliged to pay for its return and to refund in full.
    Contact your local Trading Standards with specifics and see if they will intervene.
  • Ok not getting anywhere with them at all. The bed was delivered on Monday but the timescale makes no difference if they refuse to accept there is a fault/bed is not as described.
    I've had enough and now think that anyone who is thinking of buying a bed from them should read my experience first:
    My husband decided we would get a nice mattress from a shop, but save money on a bed by buying it from ebay. We wanted a ottoman divan king size bed in mink chenille fabric. The ebay ad encourages you to purchase over the phone (outside of ebay) for a discount of 10%, and my husband loves a good discount. We were told we would have to pay cash on delivery.
    Bed arrived on Monday in a rickety van with Joseph's furniture on the side (think that company is "meant" to be their supplier. Anyway the delivery man insited on money upfront and asked me to sign for it before he took it off the van.
    He put it in the hallway, it was in plastic packaging. On inspection it didn't look damaged and all bits were there, so i went to work. That night when we removed the packaging it was obvious that the headboard was mink and the bed was another colour more like a biscuit. In addition, the fabric handles on the bed were also in mink - competely different from the rest of the bed.
    I immediately rang the company who asked me to email photos. They looked at them and said that everything is exactly the right colour but we will give you a refund of Ј25 as a gesture of goodwill. Which is useless as the bed is not the right colour! I will figure out how to upload the photos for you to see. By this point i realised that this company was dodgy and i just wanted my money back (as is my right under the sales of goods act).
    For the record, they trade under 3 different names (consumer advice and the furniture omsbudsman were not impressed!): bedexpress123, online beds, and sleepy beds. Also, their address on ebay is wrong, the postcode does not match the rest of the address (consumer advice noticed this), so god only knows where my recorded delivery letter went.
    Anyway i wrote back to them via email and recorded post to say the items are not as described. I wanted to return for a full refund at their expense. I got another email saying that after "much deliberation" we will replace the bed but we do not accept that there is a fault with the one you have.
    A result you might say. But i am not comfortable having a bed from this company now. I doubt they would honour any warranty - it would be just more of this hassle.
    I happened to ring them back to request their "real" address, and they refused to give it until i told them why, at which point they got exceptionally nasty.
    If we had purchased via ebay, we may have not had to go through all of this.
    Basically if we want a refund now we have to pay Ј125 for an independent inspection of the bed, which the man at bedexpress123 took great glee in reminding me it would be at my cost. Consumer advice said i could recoup the fee in court but honestly is it worth it? This company thrives on the fact that there is pretty much nothing you can do about it.
    I am now going to make a formal complaint to ebay and trading standards as advised by consumer advice.
  • I doubt ebay will help at all since you didnt buy from their site.
    If you search each of their trading names on the companies house website it may bring up a limited company name which will give you an address which you can send a small claims summons to / letter before action.
  • I know ebay won't help me, but i think they should know about the company's practice and that they arrange sales outside of ebay. My aim now is to stop it happeneing to other people.
    I have an address now. They reluctantly gave me it over the phone. Its huddersfield. Completely different from any other address advertised. I have already emailed them stating my rights which they replied to. Taking them to court will cost Ј125 for the inspection/evidence, then admin fee for filing, then court fees. All of which I would get back if i win of course but i have to find that money first (I am not rich which is why we bought a cheap bed in the first place) AND there is always the risk I don't win. A guy in Bensons for Beds said that these companys always get away with it. On top of all that I am stuck with no bloody bed for as long as it will take for the court case to be heard.
  • Ffs the plot thickens:
    The business address they gave me is very different, and in Huddersfield rather than Dewsbury.
    It is also the address of a shop called The Bed Factory and a company called Joseph International who say they are a furniture delivery service. So they operate under 5 names so far that I know of!

  • I don't for one second think ebay are in the wrong. Sorry if I didi not make that clear. It was our choice to purchase outside of ebay. Its our own fault that we have no leg to stand on. This thread will hopefully warn others not to do the same.
    As for ebay, I rang them and they took it very seriously. After all they are losing a lot of money each time this company deals outside their website.
