A question about : BBC Gloabl Warming Experiment on your PC

Has anyone signed up for their pc to be used for the global wamring experiment, as in last nights programme about global warming on bbc four? It sounds really interesting, like something small we can all do to contribute to work on global warming.

Apologies if this has already been posted somewhere. I've had a search in a few of the boards with different key words and can't see it anywhere

Best answers:

  • Not everyone's computer will be suitable
    https://bbc.cpdn.org/help.php#suitable
They are asking for much more that most Distruibuted apps.
  • I'm running it - I think it's a really worthwhile project. It's also an opportunity for me to give something back.
  • I'm running it now too......Computer just sits here most days idling, it might aswell be doing something.
  • got this running on my parent's machine which is on 24/7 as my broadband connection is networked through it.
Got up to some time in 1924 now I think.
  • It wouldnt open on my computer which is odd cos i do seem to fit all the criteria - (Xp, broadband etc)
  • Definately a worthwhile project but my spec is nowhere near what required so I'll not be joining in
One thing to note is the potential for a bigger electricty bill (& ironically a possible (small!) global warming impact ) As well as the obvious potentially leaving your PC on for longer using more leccy, apparently when your PC is using spare CPU cycles for this sort of application its power consumption can increase by a surprising amount (PC Pro Magazine 'Switch It Off' Campaign) I dont know how applicable this might be to this app but though it might be worth mentioning.
I'm no expert on this sort of thing but theres a table on the 3rd page of the pdf with comparisons for a PC running SETI which surprised me
  • We are sat here trying to help with the climate by using special bins for certain rubbish etc whilst the goverment sits down to plan for growth of UK airports......
erm...............is it just me or..................
  • It Strikes me as another big brother is watching thing , or am i just being paranoid lol
  • I think its a case of 'if we are seen to be looking at the problem' then everyone will leave us alone.
Surely we are past the point of no return now.
  • Thread already started here on this topic.
  • I can see the point of doing these things, and dont get me wrong they are all a good worthwhile cause.... BUT, if it's like the american one that is running, it will have your processor run at 100% whilst you are not at the machine.
This will cause the CPU fan to run to try and keep it cool, use more energy and you have the risk of your PC catching fire (ok this is a small chance, but any electrical equipment could go up in flames if left switched on).
Dont mean to be the killjoy, but I don't feel comfortable leaving my PC on all day with the CPU running at max smoke.......
  • Ok, maybe I didnt make my point very well there, my sentence wasn't very well written.....
I meant that any electrical item left switched on has a higher chance of going up in flames than one that is switched off, ableit it a small chance or not.
Anyway, as this is a money saving site, doesn't everyone switch off all electrical items that aren't a necessity?
  • I don't think our 2.5Ghz p.c's are in comparisson with power stations and such like.......
I'm no electrical expert but I can't see how a p.c idling and using 100% utilization would make a huge difference in the climate situation.
And as for p.c's setting on fire.........only if used with a microwave.....
