A question about : Argos Christmas temp jobs...

Hi everyone.

Just wanted to let you know that Argos stores are now starting to put out Christmas temp job application forms. If you have any questions please feel free to ask them on here and I will be glad to answer.

p.s. I'm not an official Argos online representitive (read the signature title=Big) - just a happy worker who started as a Christmas temp in 2006 and is still there!!

Best answers:

  • When do Christmas temps usually start?
  • It varies between different stores.
Not all temps start at once, they are on split intakes. In my store the first intake is usually the last week in September and the last one is at the very latest the first week of November, usually with 3-5 people starting each week. That's 3-5 new starters as midweek workers a week and 3-5 weekenders, so 6-10 new starters a week.
  • What are the minimum number of hours you need to do for a pt weekender please> x
  • Again you need to check with the store you are applying for, but our store offers weekenders either 7 hours split over Sat & Sun (3.5hrs x2) or 6 hours Sunday, but we only usually take 1 or 2 Sunday only staff, we take on many many more 7 hour staff because Saturday or Sunday Christmas trading alone from personal experience can outweigh 2 days worth of weekday trade.
  • Is it usual not to let someone know how they got on after having a group interview?
The reason I ask is that my son (then 16) had a group interview last year and didn't hear anything aftwards (which I thought was a tad rude)
Would it be worth him applying again this year?
  • My son is starting college in Sept and has been looking for part time work. He was 16 in Jan is it worth him applying or do they not hire so young. A lot of companys dont seem to
  • cjj - We take on 16+ BUT you have to have left school, i.e. we don't take Year 11/5th Year students because of school commitments, e.g. if Year 11 John Smith started failing his GCSEs and said 'oh but I have work' then the employer would get in trouble, whereas after the compulsary education mark (Year 11) it would be fine.
mountainofdebt - He should definitely reapply. I am one of the co-ordinators at my store and when we look at the app form we have a good look at flexibility, so if he was applying for a weekend job he should be ticking all of Saturday and Sunday (morning, afternoon, evening) and any extra hours he can do. When we do assessments we look for those who are team players and contributors, not those who just sit and smile, or those who are overpowering. With regards to notification it's because once we have accepted the temps we want there's so much to do that sadly notification gets left out to those who didn't get in, and all we can really say is 'i'm sorry you didn't get a job', we may not be able to give specific feedback because for my store i've got to assess 100 - 110 people! But he should deffo re-apply.
If anyone has more questions or wants some advice please ask me on here
  • sorry, duplicate post!
  • How many hours could I work max and when could I start?
  • Where do I find the application forms? Do I need to go to my local argos? Thanks.
  • hello would they let me do 2 full days or at a push spread the hours over 3 instead of the 5 days?
  • I've had a couple of PMs from people asking what kind of roles would be involved (because Argos is unique compared to shops with stock on the salesfloor) so i'll give you a runthrough:
    CORE DEPARTMENTS
Tills - processing sales, checking stock at other stores, home delivery orders with customers. Training is provided and usually there is a till supervisor who is an experienced/senior cashier who will deal with any problems.
Collection - accepting the goods from the stockroom, monitoring which orders are ready to go and using the call forward system (Order Number 321, to your collection point please!) and showing stock to customers who want to look at an item before purchasing.
Stockroom - picking stock for customers' orders (using ladders if necessary), keeping the stockroom tidy, putting stock away (delivery, customer returns etc.) Full health & safety & handling training provided at your induction. This is not a light role, it varies from picking Nintendo Wiis to 42" TV's and mini wardrobes!
    EXTRA DEPARTMENTS
Jewellery - manning the jewellery counter, helping customers to find an ideal item, filling up displays, keeping the jewellery dept and stockroom tidy. Ongoing training provided.
Customer Services - Dealing with customer returns/refunds/exchanges/repairs, customer queries etc. Temps don't usually get trained on this department as it can be run by the permanent staff but if it's a smaller store they may need extra hands!
Salesfloor - being a presence on the shopfloor for customers who may need help, keeping the salesfloor tidy, monitoring the queue for the tills and helping customers use the QuickPay kiosks.
The job usually entails doing all or most of these rolls, i.e. we don't just hire cashiers or stockroom staff, you get to do a bit of everything
Everyone does stockroom and collection, and most do tills & salesfloor.
Quite a few do jewellery (but usually only female staff do that); it depends on your intake/the date you start.
Hope this makes it easier for everyone
  • And if anyone lives local to Stafford and doesn't fancy working in a store (*Panto boo!!!* to the store staff )
Argos Direct is recruiting for temporary call centre staff (and I hear they have excellent Team Leaders there too)
