A question about : Anyone do Tough Mudder, Tough Guy, Total Warrier, etc?

Wondered if anyone has any experience of these sorts of events and can convince me once and for all that I'm mad and its a bad idea title=Smile

Best answers:

  • It's a great idea!
I was signed up for the Spartan Sprint but due to hospital treatment leaving me unable to exercise for a month I can't do it - however I want to do the Spartan Trifecta next year.
I have a few friends who've done obstacle courses and they loved them go on - do it!
    HBS x
  • They are brilliant. Hard work but the atmosphere is amazing, everyone gets people through. I would recommend not doing it alone though and doing it with someone.
If you want to try a shorter version first there is 'x-runner' and also 'pretty muddy (race for life version).
  • There's also the Zest Challenge which is a "women-friendly" obstacle race. 5k or 10k options - a bunch of my friends did it this year and loved it! So much so they've persuaded me to join in next year

  • They're all women-friendly

  • Thanks guys. I think I'll probably just go for one of the 'longer' 10k ones straight off the bat. Looking at the websites and peoples blogs I think I'd enjoy Total Warrior (enjoy fell running, lake district etc) - the atmosphere looks amazing.
My problem is I only have two friends who would want do it with me, one is off due to injury (she broke her back!) the other is off travelling next year. Everyone else I have asked thinks its insane.
There are a couple of guys at work who do Tough Guy but they are super fit cross fit types, and I dont know them that well, and don't like to mix work and pleasure.
Might post on a more local forum and see if anyones up for it...but would obviously prefer to do it with people I know and trust not to leave me in the mud.
  • I know someone that did a Spartan Sprint on her own - lots of people stopped to help her over walls and things

  • A few of my friends went to Tough Mudder and throughly enjoyed it!
  • I really want to do total warrior, any upper body training tips?
  • Brother and SIL did 10 k total warrior on Shap a couple of weeks back. They're quite fit but 2 of the team apart from the odd gym session were exercise free zones! They all had a great time, although one of them did go round a lot of the obstacles. They all said you need to do it in a group rather than as an individual to get the most out of it.
Having looked at the courses, bro said he didn't see the point of the longer run, as the obstacles were all the same but with a bit of road running thrown in.
As a spectator (child sitting) the atmosphere was great. But the weather was dry. On a cold rainy day I can imagine the spectators decamping at speed.
It took bro (as a half marathon runner) 2 1/2 hours, because of having to go at the speed of the slowest person. He still loved it. Even though he was beaten by SIL who'd done no training.
And there were some quite unfit looking people who made it round. Just took longer.
  • Did the Tough Guy challenge alone 6 years back and thoroughly enjoyed it.
The idea of doing it with friends is good but you will find within a while of doing the course that one of you might be holding the other back and you will soon be running alone.
To enjoy it I'd suggest you have a degree of fitness or it'll be a chore from almost the start. Also ensure your upper body can hold your weight, do pull ups etc.
I did the course in January when I knew it would be freezing in the water but knew I'd prefer that than crawling over hard ground in July.
Took me just over 2.5 hours and I was fairly fit, the last 20 minutes of running between obstacles was no longer fun.
Good luck, you'll be proud of yourself once you've completed it.
  • Friend of mine did Tough Mudder recently. He absolutely loved it. He's looking up some other events for early next year and convinced me to have a go. Should be fun, I think!
  • I've never done Tough Mudder before but I really want to at some point - sounds fantastic. Some of my friends have done it before and loved it (but sort of hated it at the same time!!) So I would say you're mad but it's not a bad idea - and I think I'm a bit mad too haha
  • I love OCR's! Obstacle and trail running breaks up the monotony of regular running and definitely makes me feel like I had achieved a much greater challenge than just running a normal 10km.
In the one we did we ran as a team, although as someone previously said we did end up separating as we ran at different paces.
It was a great atmosphere and was a great challenge. The best bit was crossing the finishing line feeling like you have really worked hard and then heading straight for the beer tent, and then showing off my awesome bruises to anyone interested afterwards
  • It's the sense of achievement afterwards. There's no achievement in just playing a game of tennis.

  • OK I don't know how bad it really is but if I had to spend months training for this as well as actually doing it, that would really put me off.
HBS, after completing my 100km bike race I got a sense of achievement but it was a sense of having achieved something pointless. It wasn't a good feeling. Do a painting, learn a foreign language, surely those will give you a better sense of achievement?
  • I did mud runner Oblivion this year in June , at Eastnor castle , where they test-drive the land rovers .Id never heard of this event and was cajoled into it by a couple we met on holiday in lesvos last September. we had a brilliant time and it was such a laugh , i did it in 2 hours 30 mins and it was 10 k , we did train for it , but not excessively .
it was a great weekend and am doing it again next year , we also raised money for charity .
