A question about : American Express Platinum Referral

Hello All!

This is my first post to the MSE Forums, I'm a long time lurker, quite shy, haven't posted until now as I haven't had much to share, however that's just changed and thought I would share this with you all in the hope that others will benefit from this offer.

American Express have a new Member Get Member refer-a-friend campaign running. For the British Airways Amex Cards it works like this:

The person who is applying for the card gets:
7,000 BA Miles if they're referred & accepted for the Premium Plus card. (Possibly 13,000; see below)
2,000 BA Miles if they're referred & accepted for for the standard BA card. (Possibly 3,000; see below)

The person doing the referring gets (for a successful referral):
2,000 BA Miles if they hold an Amex British Airways card.
4,000 BA Miles if they hold an Amex British Airways Premium Plus card.

This compares to the standard 1,000/6,000 'first card use' miles advertised on Amex's site.

HOWEVER, when my father in law applied for the BA card - he received his 2,000 referral bonus instantly - AND, when he spent on the card for the first time, the 1,000 standard/advertised bonus was also awarded! He is now showing 3,030 miles (the bonus points plus his £30 spend points.) Therefore, although I'm not promising, you could receive upto 13,000 BA Miles for the Premium Plus if referred by a friend! (7,000 refer-a-friend bonus + standard 6,000 first use bonus.).

Another good reason to get the cards now is, once you have the card, you're more than welcome to refer your parents, inlaws, brothers, sisters, relatives, friends to get their own cards to boost your own BA Miles balance! Think of the possibilities! ;-)

I'm of course more than happy to be a friend to anyone here and refer you for a BA or BAPP credit card so you can get the bonus miles. title=Big Please PM your name and e-mail address and I'll fire you off an email.

I will be happy to make a donation to charity for each referral, as recommended by this site's rules. I'm thinking £5-10 per referral. This is much higher than the 10% recommended.

Here is the link for existing cardholders (to refer a friend with):

All the best,
Speedy

P.S. it also appears that if you place a Quidco cookie on the Amex site thru following the Quidco link, and THEN use the email link from your friend to signup, you'll be awarded both the bonus miles and the £25 Quidco cashback on top! 13,000 BA Miles is worth £91 based on MSE's loyalty points checker - twice that if you are redeeming a 2-4-1 voucher.

  • Hi Speedbirdone,
I've just been on the American Express site thinking of applying for their cashback card but got tempted by this one - have you used any airmiles yet? Are they easy to redeem? Can you only redeem them with BA (in that their flights are more expensive than most). Their site doesn't seem very user-friendly when you ask a question that hasn't previously been asked
    Thanks,
    Shegee
  • Hi Shegee,
I've found the BA Miles very easy to collect - in a little over 6 months I have nearly 100,000 of them! To be honest though, most of these have been through Tesco and using various schemes to rack up clubcard points, then converting those to BA Miles. (Recycling inkjet cartridges which you can buy cheaply on ebay - roughly £100 for 24,000 miles - and using clubcard '500 points when you spend £50' codes etc).
Where I use the Amex is for the 2-4-1 voucher (spend £10,000 in a year on he premium plus and you get a free companion voucher). This in essence DOUBLES the value of whatever miles you have collected, whether through Amex or elsewhere. How much is that worth? Depends on how much the non-free ticket 'costs'. Could be thousands!
BA Miles or Airmiles are okay for economy flight redemptions, but to be honest, they're much better if you think them as a way of "flying Club Class for the price of economy." You only need 2X the miles to fly Club Class - paying cash, you can expect to pay 10X for the privilege. In a little over six months, I have enough to fly to Mauritius in Club Class, and getting close to trigerring my Amex 2-4-1 to take Mrs SpeedbirdOne with me So with effort (and a little, not much, money) it's possible to get many miles, very quickly.
Redeeming BA Miles depends on your destination. Australia is nearly impossible, but places like Mauritius, and other 'medium-haul' flights can be very easy. But if you want to explore, and can be a little flexible, you'll find plenty of possibilities!
In the interests of honesty, the BA Premium Plus carries a £120 annual fee. But this is reduced to £30 if you have an existing Amex card (which I did.) The BA standard card is free, but you need to spend £20,000 per year to trigger the 2-4-1 on that one (vs. £10,000 for the BAPP).
What you COULD do - which my father in law has done - is get the BA standard card now (and your 3,000 miles), and collect 1 BA mile per £ spent, find out how to get lots of BA miles through Tesco (I can PM you more info), and get collecting. But also get another Amex card at the same time, such as the Platinum Cashback Credit Card. And when you're getting close to your target amount of miles, you can easily upgrade to the Premium Plus. Because you'll have another Amex card when you upgrade, the fee is reduced, but you get to keep all the miles you've earnt!
Hope I have not made this sound needlessly complicated. It's a great way to travel well, if you're up for flying long distance flights 'in style.' Personally this is perfect for me - I prefer to go to places far out, and this way, I don't have to worry about being shoved in cattle class too!
Getting the most of the scheme requires a little study and a bit of flexibility, but I feel its more than worth it, as it opens up new possibilities. Let me know if you need any more informatino I'd be happy to help.
    Quote:
  • how many miles did you need for mauritus? im really confused as to how it works. is it a certain amount of miles for ecomony and then another x amount for prmeium economy? or do you pay for the economy and use the miles for upgrades?
  • To be honest they are a bit of a scam unless you wish to holiday in a war zone traveling on Xmas day and returning on New Year's eve.
I have lost no end of 2-4-1 vouchers because I can never book to anywhere useful at a time that any sane person would want to go there and BA are totally inflexible.
If you can upgrade with them I have yet to find a flight where they ever have any upgrades available.
If, on the off chance, you do manage to book a flight with BA miles you will still be asked to pay taxes and surcharges, airport duties etc which amounts to 80% of the cost of the flight anyway.
As I travel extensively these are not small frustrations. If you want good advice get the cash back card instead.
Oh and I have nearly 200,000 miles that I cant spend
  • Hi all,
I've searched to see if there is already a post for this, but I can't find one - apologies if I've missed it.
If you are planning to get an Amex Platinum Cashback credit card (currently the highest cashback paying card per Martin's recommendations), if I refer you, you'll get a Ј20 cashback bonus if you spend Ј3k on the card within the first 12 month. I will also receive Ј20 cashback.
Not exactly going to make us rich, but not bad if you were thinking of applying anyway.
More details and T&Cs are below.
If you're interested in being introduced, PM me your email address, and I'll recommend you.

What will you turn your cashback into?

A much better bonus than using the cashback sites at the mo, only Ј5 for amex!
  • Yes! And Quidco used to be a really good Ј27!
  • I got Ј34 from quidco a while back .
I can also offer to refer anyone whos going to get the amex cashback card.
I'd definately recommend the amex as the best cashback card offering 5% cashback for the 1st 3 months, and 1.5% thereafter, just from paying for things in a slightly different way).
By being referred you'll get Ј20 as opposed to the Ј5 available from quidco at present.
So PM me if you're interested.
    Cheers.
  • Just to clarify, cashback is 5% for first 3 months (up to a max of Ј100), which would mean you had spent Ј2,000 on the card.
Then, the rate reverts to 0.5% until you've spent Ј3,500 on the card.
Between spends of Ј3,500 and Ј10,000, the rate is 1%, and above Ј10,000 the rate is 1.5%.
So, if you spent 2k per month on the card, in your first year you would earn the following:
Referal cashback (PM me for referal) = Ј20
    First Ј2,000 = Ј100
    Up to Ј3,500 = Ј7.50
    Up to Ј10,000 = Ј65
    Remaining Ј12,000 = Ј180
Equaling a total of Ј372.50 over year one.
  • Likewise I can also refer for this cashback offer. Feel free to PM me and I'll take care of my side of things as soon as possible.
  • Hi
I can also refer you for us both to receive Ј20. Ive not referred anyone yet so hope its ok to post it on this thread
Not only will you get Ј20 free but they offer you 5% cashback on all purchases for the first 3 months! Its one of the best paying cashback credit cards according to Martin tips!
  • Cashback is great, just disappointed at the number of refusals I get when I present the Amex card.
    Rgds
    Phil
  • You're right - can't always use the card, but when you can you really do quickly rack up the cashback.
Was suprised the other day to find that B&Q don't take it.
  • The only shops Ive found so far who dont use it is B&Q and Co-Op
  • This is a good offer, I have recently had my cashback from this card and was really pleased with just under Ј100.
If anyone would like a referal im at my PC most of the time, just PM me!
  • I agree I was already a member, but got my wife to apply to get the 5% for three months offer. This worked well.
The Ј20 cashback for applying if the applicant is referred by an existing member is still available.
If you would like a referal and discuss how you could benefit from this please PM me.
  • Hi,
If anyone wants a referal for Amex Platinum (still Martin's top cashback card) please PM me your name and email address.
We both get Ј20 bonus cashback. I will split my Ј20 with you 50/50 on confirmation of funds from Amex so Ј30 bonus for you.
    MSE Details on Amex here
5% cashback for first 3 months up to Ј100.
Tiered cashback up to 1.5% thereafter.
  • I can also offer referrals for american express. I will get Ј20 and you will get Ј20.
I will do a 50/50 split of my end of the referral payable by paypal or bank transfer on receipt on funds. This would make it Ј10 for me and Ј30 for you. This is a very good card and i have earned over Ј30 cashback in the last six months.
  • Want an Amex Platinum Cashback credit card? if I refer you, you'll get a Ј20 cashback bonus if you spend Ј3k on the card within the first 12 month. I will also receive Ј20 cashback.
Please PM me with you name and email address should you wish to be sent a referral link.
    Many thanks
    Jamie
