A question about : Amazon account closed with Ј300 Gift card.

Hi, I purchased Ј300 of amazon gift card as I am 17 and I don't have a credit card. I applied this balance to my new amazon account, and ordered a new iPad to the collect+ location up my road. However, shortly after I received an email from amazon stating that my account had been closed as it was related to another? Well, I've never had an amazon account before!

Anyhow, they also stated that all my open orders were cancelled. Well, what about the Ј300 of gift balance I bought? I emailed them asking how I could receive it. They informed me that the balance I had can no longer be accessed.

When purchasing gift certificates, it is made clear that the use of the gift certificates is subject to the rules of using our website. Where a customer's account is closed for abuse of our policies, it is done because the rules of our website have been breached and that customer has therefore forfeited the right to use it. Accordingly, that person also loses all right to use gift certificates, and is not entitled to transfer the certificates or have a cash value payment in lieu.

You should refer the matter to the company or person who provided you with the gift certificates; perhaps they could provide an alternative.

Now, what am I supposed to do? I'd been saving up for a few months for that Ј300, only to have it practically stolen by Amazon. I'm so confused and I genuinely have no idea what to do. Should I write to local news? Should I keep complaining? Please help!

Best answers:

  • How and where did you buy the gift certificate ?
  • It doesn't sound like Amazon, so I suspect something is amiss with the gift card.
It doesn't make too much sense at present, as above, I think where the gift cards came from is the key.
  • Was the Amazon account opened by you and in your name?
If so, this will probably be why it was closed as you must be 18 years old to open an account with them and as such, the following from their e-mail will apply.

  • it seems as you are Under 18 you cannot have an account unless

  • I might have got the wrogn end of the stick here- and I'm sure regulars will correct me. That site trades cards- so the cards they have for Amazon are traded in from other suers and then sold on to new people via 'other' currency like bitcoins.
So there are several weak links including the fact that the card may have originally been purchased via a now banned account.
Add to that operating an account whilst under age was never going to be foolproof.
  • You will have to get your father to contact Amazon and ask why his account was closed.
Only when he has that information will anyone be able to give an opinion as to what the next step for him to take should be.
  • Something fishy going on.
not have credit card to buy ipad with?
However bought gift card online? how? that site accepts bitcoin, how did you purchase bitcoin?
why did you not just get your father to buy using his card and you pay him cash?
or buy gift card from a reputable retailer with cash?
  • I get the feeling that we are not getting the full story here.
  • I think you have opened your own Amazon account and Amazon have spotted you are under 18 so closed the account for breaching their terms
  • Pock.io looks genuine enough, although I have no experience of them.
You may want to be looking closer to home and find out why your father isn't allowed on Amazon.
If Amazon have closed the account then you can't use the gift certificates. You will then have to refer back to pock.io and let them know you can no longer use the gift certificates and would like an alternative. At this stage that is your best, and probably only, option.
You're on a sticky wicket as you have used a false account/false details so have negated all consumer rights.
  • OP why did you not just order Apple Store Gift Card from Pock.io if you were using them for an ipad
  • Ok, fine, I didn't use my dads account, but why is that the issue? I should still be entitled to get my gift cards back at least! How can they justify keeping my money?
