A question about : All Electric House. Power companies treat one fuel customers detrimentally.

Since we changed from oil central heating to an Air Source Heat Pump last March we have been completely electric. There are a lot of good deals we cannot get because we don't get gas. I have just looked at eon and their only option is the most expensive regular tariff. I can understand why customers can benefit financially from taking gas and electric from the same company but don't see why I should suffer a financial detriment because we only have electric. We will probably be using about 9000kWh per annum.

Best answers:

  • We are all electric and can't see that we are being penalised although I don't check dual fuel tariffs.
We also have an ASHP and use an average of about 7500kwh a year although it's very dependent on the weather. Our worst year was 8800kw in 2012 and last year we only used 6000kw.
I'm on a single rate tariff and pay 11p/kwh plus 20p a day. There's no point in having E7 as the unit runs virtually all day and turns down overnight. I can probably reduce that a tad but as I'll have to pay Ј30 to swap I'll wait until April when my contract expires and I'll be shopping around for another 12-18 month fix
  • ASHP here too, always been very happy with the deals I get
    Unit Rate: 10.05p per kWh
    Standing Charge: 23.82p per day
    Inc. VAT
    Cheers
  • We do not have mains gas so are also on a single fuel deal with electricity at 10.857p per kWh and we are not being penalised for electricity only.
There was an interesting article in September in the Guardian pointing out that actually most people could save by sourcing gas & electricity separately rather than on a dual fuel deal:-

  • We have been all electric for the past year and have kept our gas supply with Ebico (so no standing charge).
From doing comparisons, the best single tariff electricity is as good as the dual fuel offers. I'd agree that it usually works out cheaper to take gas and electricity from different companies - no-one's dual fuel tariff is the lowest for both fuels.
  • In the Eastern Region I can get electricity prices cheaper than I am paying if I also had gas but can't get the same prices for just electric. The initial idea of getting discounts for taking both fuels with the same company was obvious but effectively I AM. in the case of eon the only tarrif available to me is the standard (most expensive tariff). In the case of the Co-op their cheapest tariff of 10.35p/ kWh and 20.55p/day standing charge is not available to me. Instead I can pay 11.65p/kWh and 20.0p/ day standing charge. Every provider I have looked at is the same.
