A question about : 1st lawn cut of the year

So when to you make your 1st lawn cut of the year.

My lawn is growing like mad, but I think it is too cold to cut the lawn, or more cold weather is on the way.

So when do you start lawn cutting.

Best answers:

  • My golf course cuts grass all the year round .I don't think you have to worry about the temp, more the state of the ground/grass. Is it dry enough to cut.
  • Mine could do with a cut but its far too boggy I tried walking on it yesterday, not a good idea. I cut it as soon as the ground dries a bit.. usually late March or early April..
  • Thanks folks, I was going to do a bit today, but it is chucking it down at the moment, so I guess I'll have to do the hoovering inside instead.
  • You can do it on a high setting to tidy it up a bit as soon as the ground's dry enough. Try to avoid going over the same area more than once.
  • I going to wait until my lawn looks less like a swimming pool!
  • March.
The first dry spell, usually an afternoon when the dew has all gone. First cut is high after raking with a wire rake. Then cuts after that are short.
I try and make the last cut in October.
  • I shall start as soon as dry enough, high setting for a few weeks, then down a bit towards the summer, then about Sept back gradually to high again and then end in late Oct.
  • Another month or so for mine I reckon, way too wet atm, dragged something across it at the weekend and its a right muddy mess in that part now - whoops!
  • I was going to give my lawn a trim today but woke up to rain, so no chance for a few days, but lawn does need a trim its worse than my hair and that's saying something
  • Rear Garden, looks more mud than grass, so that's going to be a few weeks more.
Front Garden, looks like it could be cut. It was last cut October.
  • Still only a slight growth so mine will get a cut mid March once there is little chance of a heavy frost, nice and white this morning.
