  • I'm sitting here trying to think of good things to say about this scheme.
I am a (very) early adopter, and by the time the Government's scheme came in offering Ј650 cashback if you installed double glazing, mine had been in place for a decade. I was one of the first in my street to install d/g - 25 years later it is falling off its hinges and I haven't the money to repair or replace.
I shall not be using the new Green Deal HIF, for the simple reason that if I pay Ј22 pcm for an improvement that saves me Ј22 in energy, I am no better off. And because I already have double glazing -even though its broken- so I don't qualify for what would be most attractive. I might have been tempted by new storage heaters, but what I really need is a new immersion heater every 5 years, costing Ј100. Except that doesn't play into BGs coffers.
This new GDHIF scheme seems more intent on creating work than in subsidising improvements.
40 years ago we had a Ј5,000 grant from our local council for home improvements to a 1900 house- wiring, kitchen, heating system. Our contribution was Ј500.
One thing I wish is that they would extend the offer of double glazing to homes where the existing double glazing is over a certain age, say 20 years. If it's working fine you're not going to want the upheaval of a full refit, but I'd welcome the opportunity to replace a broken door.
