Hello all! Welcome to the new home of The 1% Challenge. The first 8 months flew by and we did amazingly well! (Ј85K cleared - Amazing!!!!)

Time for a fresh new thread at the start of a fresh new month!

What's it all about?

So, for anyone new to the challenge & joining us here for the first time, you might find the back-story helpful. The original thread is here Post 1951 on pg 98 was the year end round up and has all the stats.

Basically the idea is that money comes to us in lots of small ways and we don't often realise it. When faced with a big debt it can be overwhelming and we find ourselves just waiting for the next pay day when we can make a large payment.

However, we shouldn't be counting paydays as that's really demotivating, we should be saying we're 100 steps away from being Debt Free or our Savings Target. Each step is 1%. You can do those steps as fast or as slow as you like, as long as you are making progress. There are many ways you can make your 1%. So many in fact that I put together a list of over 100+ ways you can make 1%. Some can even be done several times!!

When the budget has settled and you have a long journey ahead of you, it often gets tough, trying to look for the light at the end of the tunnel. We often push ourselves hard but always wish we could pay more, do more and save more. Sometimes it's hard to be satisfied with the baby steps that we know are good for us.

By doing it 1% at a time and celebrating every milestone, you're on the debt-free ladder & you know exactly which rung you're on. You can take the steps as fast or slow as you like. When you need to, you can pause for a while and reflect on your progress and then carry on renewed.

We need to enjoy the journey and not just the destination.

Three Golden Rules

1. You MUST pay your minimums to your debts each month (This is covering your interest) The percents you earn are in addition to covering your monthly minimums.

2. Always work with accurate balances. Honesty with yourself now saves you from being disappointed with your balances later on.

3. When you feel overwhelmed or demotivated just focus on your next 1%

How To Join in on the challenge! -

Post in BIG colourful letters, your name, 1% and total so far. I'll add you to the list. e.g LITTLE MISS UNI-DEBT - 1% is Ј80.

What you might need :-
Moneybox / petty cash tin (keep your Јs safe!)
100 wage envelopes, or 100 paperclips - (the freer the better)
Notebook
Free printable 100 square here or here (press begin & then print)
(or make one of your own! Get the felt pens out! )

How to...
Take your exact debt or savings total and divide by 100.
Round UP to the nearest Ј1 or Ј10. This is your 1%
In your notebook start a list of 100 ways that you can earn 1%
Print the ideas list below for inspiration
Use the thread for support & motivation
Contribute new ideas and what worked for you
Shout up and join the list & get a member number.
Post a weekly/monthly update of what you've done and how you did it!
Have fun with the super secret smilies
Colour in your progress on your 100 square
Put your member number in your sig, and your % so far & spread the word!

Important Notes

***You MUST MUST MUST pay your minimum payments to all of your debts AND save your 1%'s as well.*** This is now a golden rule

Your 1%'s are what you owe, your min payments are the interest you are paying. I consider the min payments as a 'service charge' the cost of rolling your debt on to the next month. This makes you consider just how much your debt is costing you each month!

As you pay your 1%'s to your cards, your min payments will start to drop. The faster you put your 1%'s to your cards the less interest you will pay.

If you save up to 100% and pay it off in one go this is MORE expensive than paying each 1% as soon as you have earned it. (I try to save 5% then pay it off)

This challenge is probably best for debts/savings Ј20k or less.
If you find your 1% still too daunting, just decide on how much you want to pay off this year. Divide it by 100. That should give you a 1% figure that is more suitable. Some find it easier to do one card at a time, starting with the highest interest rate.

If your debt is still increasing through spending, this challenge isn't right for you yet. You need to go back a step to your SOA and re-work it until your debt is steady and you have a little room for overpayments. Then come back when you're ready!

• Hello! How exciting to have a new home LMUD
  When you get round to adding members can you put me as 42.5% please - I've just managed to make a payment of 1.5% - this was through it being a non-pay month for council tax and water rates (had budgetted for both) and a little bit of ebay selling. I was a bit slow over February so I'm hoping to pick it up again now. Looking forward to trying out some different ways to generate extra debt payments. Good luck everyone, let's bust those percents!

• Would just like to declare another 1% bringing me to 17% now.
  For anyone who's struggling to make bigger amounts I thought I'd break down how I made this Ј80 from little amounts: Ј25 - selling gold ring, Ј10 - unexpected payment from client, Ј20 - saving Ј1 coins in a money bag over Jan/Feb, Ј4.58 - music magpie, Ј3.78 - Quidco payment, Ј13 - interest from savings account from last few months, Ј3.64 - made up to Ј80 from my current account.
  See how all these little things added up. Don't lose heart if your not making the big amounts, I could have spent all of thos tiny amounts without noticing but because I saved them it added up in the end.

  LMUD - we finally had the essential building work done and it came to Ј870. 00. More than we thought but had to be done. The bank of mumanddad funded it and I am paying them back.
  1% = Ј8.70
  Paid so far Ј50.00 = 5.7%
  Balance remaining Ј820.00. I have items on ebay and I'm waiting to hear back about a mobile phone I put in for recycling. I'm using TCN and Јco too so hopefully the % will start to increase .

  1% = Ј69, currently at 7%!
  I'm also building up a nice little pot on Paypal from Ebay sales, have got approx 1% sat in there but still have fees to pay so I'm leaving it there for a while until I can build up a bit more, and at least it stops any temptation to just spend!

  5. Coupons: Couple coupons used totalling Ј1.70, total now Ј11.85.
  6. Referrals: Ј9 from VioVet. Placed another order with iHerb using referral credit, but it's not showing in my CC statement yet, so don't know exchange rate, will include it later. Total Ј44.56.
  7. Homebrew: adding savings of Ј5.80 from homemade raspberry wine and Ј1.26 from cider, total now Ј77.49.
  8. Cashback (new category): Ј33.75 from Quidco cashback.
  9. Banking (new category): Ј30.00 from two Halifax Reward accounts (self & hubby) x three months.

  Nice to see a shiny new thread back where it belongs, I have to say I think we gt a little lost in the diaries section!
  I'm sorry for being MIA as of late, but I'm back to studying and working 6 days means very little spare time! This months pay was down by almost Ј400 due to repaying study fees and one day sick in January when I had the car crash, so this month is going to be a bit tight. However for the month of February we'e been able to make a bit of headway:
  Number 99 : Ј1063 paid off = 7.5%
  This is made up of Ј400 from matched betting and My January and February second jobs pay.
  I've now read The Dave Ramsey book Total Money Makeover and have decided to follow atleast baby steps 1 and 2 and have managed to get an emergency fund setup of Ј1000 by cashing in our bonds and by moving the pitiful amounts in our Isa's into one account, so going forward will be using my second wage to pay of balances straight away, instead of hanging onto it. I reckon if we can pay off our second overdraft this month then we will be approx Ј40 better off a month(Ј15 int on overdraft 1, Ј10 on overdraft 2, Ј16 int on credit card now paid off in full) so were getting there.
  Well I think I'm going to have to take myself to bed, I can't stop yawning!!!

• Brilliant, a nice new thread. Things have been tight in feb, but we somehow managed to pay 9% off since my last post, putting my credit card debt at..21% PAID!
• Hi can I tag along please? I don't really understand the rules but I think I've got a rough idea.
  I have a debt of Ј2500 for my hubby's car and I want it to be gone asap. The actual payments are supposed to be Ј70 pw but we overpay and pay Ј100 (mainly because it's easier to keep track of how much we've paid).
  Once we've got rid of the car debt we can put the Ј100 pw towards paying off the mortgage - Ј12k left on that.
  I've got some stuff coming to an end on ebay today so will use that but also I put the odd pence on my bank account into a savings account so would I be able to use that?
  I wasn't sure if the money has to be 'made' iyswim.
• Money can come from anywhere - selling stuff, savings on your monthly budgets, earnings, your current account, gifts from others. Absolutely anywhere! Good luck

  Just made Ј25 by selling stuff on ebay so that's 1% and I think I might have another Ј25 in my pennies jar.
  If I have anything left over from my budgets then this will get added once it reaches a Ј25 sum.

  OK can I join properly then please? My 1% = Ј25 and I have 100% still to pay. I will pay a minimum of 4% off or Ј100 at a time because I need to keep it simple.

  I see the value of having a 100 square chart which is a good idea but I'm a bit confused about the other items.
