A question about : Check your insurance

Just a word of caution. Imagine there is a storm which causes the sewers to flood and damages your property. You may think that you can claim from your local water board.

Well if you do, you may be in for a shock. They may be liable if for example they have not maintained the network, but if they have done, it probably isn't their responsibility. An act of God so to speak.

In such circumstances your insurance may not cover this either. Worth checking your insurance details?

A question about : water standing charges

for the first time we are living in a property with a water meter, its expensive.

I understand why the standing charge is made:

cost of sending bills, collecting payments, dealing with enquiries, (as per the bill)

I do not understand why

1) the standing charges are based on your usage?
2) there are 2 standing chgs (metered water & metered wastewater)?
only one reading and one bill

A question about : Water Bill

Hi everyone, thanks in advance for any responses.

Our water bill has gone up significantly since April this year - we're on a water meter. The direct debit is now Ј47.33 a month. There are only 2 of us - but we are both at home all day.

Our usage from 4th Apr - 17th Sept was 64 cubic meters and the bill was Ј250.

Does this usage sound too much or about right given we're at home all day? I don't use water to wash the car or water the garden and we don't have a pool or anything crazy like that.

A question about : United utilities bill nearly tripled

Hi, and thanks in advance for reading.

I'm looking for a little advice, my last bill seems to have doubled but I am having no luck with United Utilities.
A break down of my bills are as follows:
24/04/13 read - 03/09/13 estimated (133 days) - 35cm Ј146.43
03/09/13 estimated - 04/03/14 read (182 days) - 7cm Ј83.79

So this averages at 315 days at 42cm or 42 / 315 = 0.13cm per day and 0.13cm X 365 = 48.6cm per year.

A question about : High water bill, constantly spinning meter

Hi all,

We have recently had a considerable increase in our monthly water bill due to 'high usage', from Ј34 to Ј77.

We live in a flat and don't think our water usage has changed or is above average. Washing machine 2-3 times a week, Wash dishes 2x a day (No dishwasher), 2 quick morning showers and a rare bath.

I checked our outside water meter and noticed that the circular black dial in the center was constantly rotating, even with no taps running.

A question about : checking flowon shower

Just tried checking flow rate on shower, is this the best way?

Trying to figure out if I have flow restrictor on shower.

Turned shower on , collected all water from shower head for the first 10 seconds, then timed that by 6, collected 1 litre, so 6 litres a min, so a 5 min shower is 30 litres,which sounds good to me?
