Hi does anyone know how long it takes for a cheque to clear from the US to a UK bank account

Best answers:

• Probably about as long as to get a new British passport. Allow a year and you will probably have a pleasant surprise.
• Ha ha that's funny it's been in there 8days now still not clear

So i'm 28 and looking to get a place with my girlfriend. We have over half saved for a house deposit.

We are saving for different things, My Girlfriend is saving for the Deposit and i am saving for the furnishings, fees, and other stuff we may need.

I am just writing this now basically for any advice.

We are both using eBay to make some extra money from old stuff we need. But i shall update this later with whats saved so far more of a log to myself and partner who is on this aswell.

I hope this is the right place to post this.

I am not good with money and over many years have overspent on trivia with nothing to show for it. I seem to have made poor financial decisions all my life. A few years ago I got into serious trouble and started a DMP which helped me focus on necessary spending. I was also made redundant which meant I could finish paying off my debts and clear my mortgage. My redundancy also paid for retraining.

I've been a MSE reader for years, using numerous advice services - best currency, credit card switching, etc, but I've always felt I haven't had the time (or actually the need) to sit down and go through my expenditures and see where I could save.

However, I have a 3-hour daily commute to work so I decided to use that time to give it a go - Martin's messages of taking a day off to save yourself Ј1,000 has always been tempting!

So, after spending just 3 hours I managed to save on the following;

This weeks email actually came in handy for me for a large purchase (I've had a few small savings/freebies from previous emails but nothing worth shouting much about and don't make many larger purchases).

I've been putting some money away to get myself a new Vax pet vacuum cleaner after Christmas and saw the Vax sale website on today's email so thought I'd see how much I could save - I've just ordered a Power 8 Pet Upright Vacuum Cleaner, down from Ј89.99 to Ј46.99 - costing Ј35 less than the one I had in mind in Argos, but with better specs!

I am a 17 year old student and work weekends at Marks & Spencers and get 20% off..

This saving means I can save 30p on a Ј1.50 m&s sandiwch while at College (I usually buy two and save 60p = Ј3.00 a week saving)

We spent Ј40.00 on a shop at M&S and got Ј8 off!
