A question about : WTF Just had cold call from BT.....

I am registered with the Telephone preferences service (or whatever it is called) to not get cold calls. Checked the other day and registration is still current.

Tonight phone rang and it was a cold call from someone claiming to be calling on behalf of BT, about some wonderful offer they now had available. Hung up at that point.

Was it really BT? Checked on the number calling me and it was 0800 9539090

  • So why is BT running a marketing campaign making unsolicited calls to customers who are signed up to the TPS?
  • If you already have a consumer relationship with BT, then TPS cannot prevent them from ringing you as it's not really a "cold call".
  • No did not tick any box do not tick boxes like that ever. Think the weasel get out mentioned above, that I am already a bt customer, is probably the reason.
  • According to Which, "UK-based companies must not make unsolicited sales and marketing calls to TPS-registered phone numbers", and "Data protection laws prohibit companies from calling you for marketing purposes if you've asked them not to, even if you're a customer."
I told the caller I did not want any more calls but this has made no difference, still getting them presumably because they are based overseas and BT agents, not BT itself. The only thing I could find online about call blocking with BT was to pay themfor a call blocking service. Not quite my idea - to pay BT NOT to call me.
How do I contact BT to say I do not want marketing calls or more precisely who do I call?
  • Hi littlerock,
If you send in your details using the contacts details in my profile we can opt you out from marketing calls.
    Cheers

  • I just this morning received a called from Alister from BT asking if I was with BT. The answer to this is no, never been with BT nor do I even have a BT line into my flat. I was getting the SMS messages but Virgin have blocked this number.
I am with TPS and have reported this. The number came up as Private and I actually thought it might be my doctor's surgery, as I have health problems.
So BT, !!!! off and stop phoning me as I have no interest in your products.
  • He sounded off my name and post code and I stopped him asking, "Who are you?" Got the Alister from BT. So now I know not to answer the private numbers, they can just leave a message.
