A question about : Would you do this?

A few months ago i put my name down to work in the local pizza place at night.
I can't work during the day as i have 2 little un's, so yesterday i got a call asking me if i wanted the job.
The hours are 4pm-2.30am, wages are 60 quid but he keeps 10 of it every week incase you leave without notice.
I would be doing counter work and possible helping in the kitchen with food as well.

Best answers:

  • erm dont do it!
No normal place would keep Ј10 of your wages incase you would leave, i'd steer well clear
  • hi hun, that does not sound good - avoid! Keeping Ј10 a week back? Nope, not normal practice!
  • Irishmum. I have sent you a PM
  • Never mind the money stop and think of all the abuse and drunken idiots you are going to have to contend with up till 02:30 in the morning agree with other posters stay well clear!.
  • It's barely (but just!) minimum wage for unsocial hours and proabably an ear load of drunken abuse. You get part of your wages retained for no good reason (for how long? How many weeks wages? Do you get interest on the retained earnings?)By the time you get home & get to bed it's at least 3am, then you have to get up at a reasonable hour & deal with your children the next day. I wouldn't do it.
  • Hi
I was wondering, do you drive?
I work as a home care worker and they always need evening staff, it's nothing to gorey in the evenings either, mainly just check calls or heloing people into their jammy's.
Only thing is you need a car to do the job.
  • Thanks folks, think i am going to give it a miss, not worth the hassle at the end of the day. I am not that desperate for cash just thought it could be a wee bit extra.
I will look into the home care work, as i have just passed my driving test.
  • I used to work for dominos for awhile when i needed extra income..its not that bad really..better if you dont have to deliver..can get a bit hairy sometimes
  • Witholding Ј10 a week!!!?
Thats disgusting. I have worked places where the first weeks wages are withheld in case you walk out but Ј10 a week is outrageous. Steer very well clear, sounds highly dodgy.
And what if you work there for a few years? I find it hard to believe they willl hand you all that cash back (one years withheld wages is Ј520!)
Glad you've seen the light OP, all us DFW want jobs but not ones that take the p!
  • People seem outraged at him keeping Ј10/week... but most employers keep a whole month's wages simply by paying you monthly!
  • Have I got my maths right? 10 and one-half hours for Ј60. NMW would be Ј53.28 for that (at Ј5.52 per hour). Ј60 minus Ј10 deduction would be Ј50 (ie Ј3.28 short of NMW for the night).
Glad you are not planning on taking this apology for a job - but please do everyone else a favour and report him to the Minimum Wage enforcers at HM Revenue and Customs.
  • Witholding pay is unlawful. Certain deductions are allowed, but only if you agree (doesn't apply to tax & NIC which, if due, must be deducted if you're paid via PAYE).
    A 10.5 hour shift
  • Its a job, and it depends on your circumstances and what else is around ? I would take it and see how it goes.
  • Avoid, holding back Ј10 a week just seems way out of order (do you get it back if you don't walk?, if you do is this gaurenteed? As this is YOUR money, not his, is it held in a seperate trust a/c, and do you get the interest?)
Also, is less than min wage (as ceridwen points out) enough to compensate you for working till 2:30 am? Depending on where it is, it sounds ideal for drunks on the way back from pub/club to get food at!
  • Glad your'e avoiding this job, and hope that you find something more suitable.
Despite being tempted of earning extra cash. I would'nt touch this job either!
  • I agree with a lot of the other posters. I am so glad you are not going to take that job. It all sounds fishy to me. I think he is a chancer and i would steer well clear of his type. Good luck with whatever you decide to do. Home care would be good as you drive. I used to do home care work as well.
