A question about : Will claiming affect me applying for a mortgage?

I've recently put in PPI claims with a few different lenders, halif*x CC being one of them. This card was paid off over 6 years ago and closed down (no default or adverse history on it).

Prior to my attemt to reclaim I had a DIP from halifax for a mortgage of Ј160k, for one reason or another I never went through with this. 12 months down the line I've applied for another mortgage with them and they will only offer me a mortgage of Ј50k !! Could this have anything to do with my attempt at reclaiming PPI? I've looked at my credit file and there is nothing on there that would suggest this. I have cleared a lot of debt over the last few months and am in a much better position financially than I was 6 months ago so I am baffled.

I'm now worried that if Halifax have done this then so could the other banks that I am also making a claim against.

Would appreciate any advice.

Best answers:

  • It's extremely unlikely - banks make lots of money from mortgages, turning you down in spite at a PPI claim would make no sense - they'd probably get more back from you than they paid out if they offered you one.
Changes in lending rules and risk management at the bank is far more likely - go through a whole of market broker and see what they can get you
  • Thank you Nasqueron for your comments. That makes sense what you are saying, I'll contact a broker and take it from there.
