A question about : Why is there no mse guide about care home fees?

As a family we are currently going through the procedure of having my Grandmother go into a care home due to dementia.

My parents saw a care home they would have loved my Grandmother to go into, but then they found it wasn't going to be possible because the home charged '3rd party top up fees'. We'd never heard that phrase before and couldn't understand why my Grandmother wasn't able to use her own money, she has a few thousand pounds in the bank and owns a property outright. In addition my parents seem to have been given incorrect advice from a social worker, over how long a property is disregarded for when entering a care home

I googled to try and find out more and was surprised when mse which was my first point of call doesn't seem to have anything on here about care home fees. I would certainly welcome more information on this area.

  • Hi Spendless
Here's our Care Homes Costs Reclaiming guide written in 2012. It's not a guide we're updating though so it's archived and there just for reference.
  • If you go on to the BBC news website today, there's an article on care home fees and a calculator to see what's funding is available in your area.
  • It's a complex area and there is good information out there available from the Alzheimers Society, Age UK and other bodies. Don't forget the possibility that care home costs may be liable to be paid by the NHS in certain circumstances too.
