A question about : Why is the cinema so expensive?

I cant believe I got charged Ј7.75 per adult ticket at the cinema a couple of days ago and this is a cinema in Fife so not within a major city. Shocking!! Also does anyone know what happened to cheap Tuesdays at Odeon? We only went on a Tuesday to get it half price but paid Ј15.50 for two tickets! Might as well buy the blue ray !!!

  • I think you are probably better off in a big city. We only paid 12 pound for a family ticket 4 of us in Birmingham but over here in Telford it works out at that for one of us to take one child.
  • Vue cheap Tuesdays stopped - but there is now a card that you can get and just show. Registration was easy at the cinema and no other contact. So that is Ј4.65. Not much of a discount (and cannot be used with other discounts). We like Tuesdays because of easier parking around, it's quieter, and cheaper than other nights.
    Don't forget Orange Wednesdays too.

  • It wasn't to see a 3D film was it ? I've noticed that my local VUe cinema charges Ј1.75 a ticket more for these than for a normal film, although they don't exactly shout about it.....
  • Hi
No it was a non 3D film. Very confused as cinema always used to cheap Tuesdays so at least it was still under a fiver. We wondered if they maybe scrapped cheap Tuesday while the school holidays were on? Anyway we will only go once or twice a year at those prices. I think the 3/4 years we've lived in this area its gone from Ј6 to Ј7.75.
  • It's even worse when you pay the Ј15.50 and it's a really duff film, or you have annoying people sitting near you. Sometimes lastminute.com do cheap cinema tickets, for about Ј4.50 I think, but not during the school holidays.
Have you tried the freebies board for free screenings? I used to get at least one free film a month.
  • There is also orange wednesdays. Pay for 1 ticket get the other free, you need an orange sim card which you can get free.
  • Ouch!! I'm in Belfast and the discount for Odeon is only on a Wednesday but thats still pretty high. I think its only Ј6.50 for an Adult here. I prefer to go to the Movie House where its like Ј5.30. More comfortable seats and nicer popcorn
  • I once took a school trip to a local cinema and they told me that the ticket price only covered something like 95% of the film rental they had to pay the distributors, so they had to make all their money on exorbitantly priced popcorn etc.
It's a shame for the British film industry - it costs me at least Ј30 to take my kids to see something - plus another Ј30 odd if I let them have kiosk snacks!! If it was cheaper, I'd take them a lot more than I do!
  • Hi
Unfortunately no Vue near us. The Odeon is the only cinema for about 15 miles - prob why they're ripping us off, they know we cant go anywhere else!!!!!
The smallest popcorn in there is Ј3.60!!!
  • Ј7 is average in Bristol. Me & my friend went to see a film in the Directors Lounge at Cinema De Luxe, and they wanted us to pay Ј12 each! Needless to say, we walked away.
  • Because its annoying me I've emailed their customer services asking why Dunfermline is so expensive and also what happened to cheap Tuesdays!!!!
    Here are some comparisons
    After 5pm,standard seats
    DUNFERMLINE Ј7.75
    Belfast Ј6.20
Dundee Ј6.75 (also Scotland, but a bigger city)
    Birmingham Ј4.50 !?!?!?!?!?!?!?
    Manchester Ј7.25
    Leeds-Bradford Ј7.00
    Glasgow Ј7.20
So it can only be because Dunfermline know we would have to travel to Edinburgh to find another cinema!!!
  • its for this reason you can buy copies of most films for a fiver at pubs and car boot sales, its an expensive time going to the cinema, add a couple kids and you need to remortgage
  • or the ones "for your consideration" these are the only ones worth watching
  • lol yes i like the for ur consideration copies too. I should add I do go to the cinema most weeks though so its only if there are way too many things out that i want to see and can't afford to see them all doh!
  • We used to go to the cinema about twice a month. Now the prices have gotten so high we might go twice a year..
Instead we subscribe to lovefilm so we get to see almost new films twice a month on our nice big tele, just as good as going to the cinema IMO.
  • Why don't you just go on to the freebie thread on this site and you can sign up to get tickets for free film previews i think that i have paid to see about 2 films this year all the rest have been free it saves a heck of a lot of money
