A question about : Who owns which fence?

We moved into our new home last winter and we're starting to plan improvements to our back garden.

Looking out the back of the house, fences to the left and right need replacing. Problem is I'm unsure who owns which side.

I always though it was to the left as you look out from your house but I'm not 100% sure.

Where should I look to find out?

Thanks

  • Your transfer/conveyance deeds will hold the definitive answer, the 'T' on the boundary will indicate the legal owner.
  • Try looking on the deeds. There are no hard and fast rules on this. You may own none of them or all of them or half of each or any other mix up you can think of.
  • All the 'T' will tell you is who is responsible for marking the boundary, not who owns the fence.
    The deeds may help, but usually a fence is owned by whoever put it up in th efirst place, or whoever subsequently bought the house.
    You could always ask the neighbours.
  • Hi,
    there was a similar thread recently, look, check the link in post 9.
  • Thanks for all the replies, no T mark on the deeds or any mention on the transfer plan
  • I've just been looking into this and I've found the following;

  • looks like we all share them
  • Usually the side that has the bracing pieces belongs to them, so if you have the good side it belongs to the neighbour.
