A question about : Which Broadband is the most Reliable and Fastest out of these 3 ISP's?

PlusNet

Sky

EE

In terms of regular broadband not superfast fibre optic service.

Best answers:

  • It's not really possible to say. They should all give a similar performance over the same line.
Of course people will come on and say X has been good for me, or X is slow for me, but that is usually down to nothing more than their individual circumstances.
I realise that occasionally things do go wrong at the ISP end, but generally speaking any speed or reliability problems are usually down to the length or quality of your phone line.
  • They all use BT lines. So they will all be as good or as bad as your line quality.
  • Plusnet and Sky probably have less complaints on here than EE .
  • The only way to be sure is for somebody to sign up for all three, so there are three telephone lines going into the same house.
You then need three computers to start testing at the same time, to eliminate the rush hour factor.
As no one is insane enough to do this, we shall never know.
Are you that one? Whose thirst for trivial knowledge knows no bounds?
  • I remember i was on sky broadband first then i switched to talktalk broadband. The reliability has decreased since switching to talktalk. With talktalk i was getting reliability issue such as drop outs.
When you say they all use the same line then why am i gettin unreliability issues with talktalk compared to sky?
  • Is this unreliability over WiFi by any chance .
I also found TT equipment to be unreliable in my exchange .
  • Ok so its the talktalk equipment in my exchange that's dodgy not my phone line?
  • They all use the same local loop. Plusnet, as a BT company, runs on the BT network, as does EE. Sky runs on it's own LLU network.
So the reliability of the first two should not vary.
  • All broadband suppliers (except if you've got Virgin TV) will use the BT cabling between the exchange and your house so the speed is as good as that cabling and the distance between you and the exchange.
Most suppliers will also share the BT equipment at the exchange excepting that some will have their own equipment in the exchange - these are called LLU suppliers - have a look at the SamKnows website (https://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange_mapping ) for your exchange to see who if any have their own equipment in the exchange.
Sometimes the LLU suppliers can be a bit better as there might be fewer customers hanging off the equipment and they might have more capacity on their main connections.
In the end it's a case of trying it out - I'm with TalkTalk (LLU) and they are faster and more reliable than when I was with Sky (not LLU) who were sharing the BT equipment. Although neither are all that good as I live 5 miles from the exchange so the limitation is the BT cabling. The Sky router was rubbish and the TT one is better.
  • As long as there is no fault conditions with either the line, the exchange equipment, or the router, then they should both as fast and reliable as each other.
  • Ok I am switching from Talktalk to PlusNet soon in a couple of weeks.
    Here is my exchange:

Can anyone confirm that PlusNet will be more reliable than my existing Talktalk?
  • Nobody can confirm this as we don't know the reason for TalkTalk dropping out. If you have a phone line fault, then you will have the same problem until that is addressed.
