A question about : Where best for S&S ISA

Looking to start a S&S Isa in April, have a particular fund in mind, but not sure who to use to Invest. I was recommended to use Hargreaves Landsdown, and they seem to offer a small discount on the fund I want, but management Fee seems to be 0.45%, which seems slighty higher than others (although I would get the discount on the fund). Looking at a couple of sites the HL site seems better laid out and easier to understand with more helpful info. This would be my 1st Investment other than pension, so quite a novice at these things. What would be the best company for a novice to use.

Best answers:

  • How much are you thinking of investing?
If you're just dipping your toe in the waters, the HL site can be good, and if it's a few pounds the difference in percentage fees isn't too significant.
If you have Јxx,xxx then it becomes more so.
So there's something to be said about starting at HL and then moving elsewhere when your pot gets larger. But watch HL's exit fees if you're considering this.
Alternatively, there are other firms with percentage-only fees that might be good for a low-value novice. I wouldn't recommend Cavendish (interface is awkward, not much info) - I don't know if one of the others is better?
  • Planning on strating with about Ј2K, then adding lumps sums when/if possible.
  • Charles Stanley seems quite popular with novices. Haven't used it myself but seems worth investigating.
  • I use CSD and HL. I prefer CSDs website, much more user friendly imo, they are also 0.2% cheaper. However CSD have less funds and sometimes, they offer wrong classes of funds.
  • The monevator blog carries a comparison of ISA and SIPP providers that it updated this week. Worth a visit.
  • Have had a look at the CSD website and still much prefer HL, as HL are offering a 0.15% discount on the fund I am interested in I don't think there is a lot of difference in the costs between the 2. I have one other little question though. Is it wise to invest the full amount into 1 fund or should I split between 2 on either a 50/50 or a 75/25 basis for a bit of extra protection for my money?
  • Its the Woodford Group Fund.
  • Well, I never knew HL are still discounting certain funds. Though it doesn't necessarily mean they are indeed the cheapest - as I said before, CSD is 1%, HL 1.05%. Interesting article on this:

  • And remember, SuiDreams, if you decide to buy another fund in the future, it'll be nice to pay 0.25% rather than 0.45% to hold it.
  • Axa looks like a good option no fees until May 2016, has anyone used them any good?
  • Also how easy is it to transfer S&S Isa's are they transferred as cash or do they transfer your investment?
Just thinking if I went for the Axa offer would it be easy to transfer to somewhere cheaper when the deal ended?
